I was thinking about this today because my local college alternative station was playing Serge Gainsbourg’s “Requiem pour un con” and I realized how luckily I was to live in a place where I can drive in my car and listen to a song with French lyrics that translate to:

“I composed it just for you

In your sordid memory

It’s a pretty theme

Don’t you see?

The ressemblance to yourself?

Poor cunt”

Being somewhat obsessive, my presets are by frequency.

1. 88.5 WXPN (aforementioned college station)

2. 90.1 WRTI (college jazz and classical station)

3. 91.1 WHYY (NPR station, shut up)

4. 98.1 WOGL (classic station with interminable DJs)

5. 102.9 WMGK (harder classic station with equally interminable DJs)

6-9 repeats of the first three.

AM 1-9 KYW 1060 (local news headlines, traffic, and weather)

I have no other AM presets, because AM radio is terrible.

Oddly, AM is the only one I bother to preset:

1) Team 1200 - sports radio

2) News 1310 - news radio

Presets 3-6 are the same.

I think I had some Sirius presets but I’m not paying for radio. I always listen to podcasts or Spotify when I’m driving.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who uses empty presets for the same station. I thought I was weird for doing that.

I have two sets of presets on FM.

1st set.

96.5 kinda crappy but reruns America in top 40

107.3 indie radio

103.1 kinda classic rock kinda metal

103.7 shitty pop in case there’s someone riding with me who likes it. I still have veto power

94.9 alt rock

106.9 classic rock/ kinda country.

And the only one I know from my other set is 90.3 my local NPR affiliate

88.1 - CBC: Our public broadcaster, news, I think sort of like Canadian NPR

99.3 - The Fox: Rock station with an identity crisis. About a 50% chance something tolerable will be playing.

101.1 - Rock 101: Classic rock, that is alright if you’re in the mood for one of the 80 or so songs on their playlist.

102.7 - The Peak: “New rock”. It’s almost never new, and it’s usually pop indie, not rock. But sometimes they play good stuff. Sometimes.

105.7 - CBC Radio 2: Classical/jazz/weird indie and Canadian stuff I usually haven’t heard before, but also a lot of random 80s stuff.

107.9 - Evolution: BCIT student radio, and as such has a pretty weak transmitter. It’s unfortunate, because they’re easily my favourite station and almost always play stuff I like.

Vancouver has really awful radio stations. I badly need a way to have my music in my car, but I don’t want an FM transmitter. I may not have a choice, unless I want to replace my entire radio/HVAC panel.

I have two NPR stations, a jazz station run by one of the two NPR affiliates, local hip-hop, and a two general top-40 stations.

I don’t get to choose the presets ‘cause I’m not the main driver. But if I did!

88.1 - Indie 88

102.1 - The Edge

107.1 - Q107

And then CDs.

94.1 WHJY, classic rock and my favorite station for my entire life. Double Shot Tuesdays, Whole Lotta Led at 5pm (Whole Lotta Ed [Van Halen] Wednesdays), Stump the DJ on Thursdays and like 25 years of the Paul and Al morning show.

95.5 WBRU, alternative rock and hipster garbage but it’s fine around noon when the do the Retro Lunch.

98.1 Cat Country, because there’s not many good stations.

98.5 the Sports Hub, my second favorite sports talk station but I really only like the morning show, Toucher and Rich.

101.5 WWBB, B101...oldies station. When I was a kid it was 50s and 60s with Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer, now it’s the 70s and 80s and I need to use my iPod to listen to Elvis, Sinatra, and Roy Orbison. Also I’m 32.

103.7 WEEI, my preferred sports radio station. Kirk and Callahan in the morning (not so much sports as politics and general news, but a good show). OMF (Ordway, Merloni, Fauria) in the midday...Lou Merloni played for the Red Sox, Christian Fauria for the Patriots. Dale and Holley in the afternoon, used to be the midday but got promoted.

I drive around all day at work, so FM radio is basically all I have.

1 - 93.3 KTCL - alternative rock

2 - 93.7 KCKK - The Rock. The weirdest radio station ever. Their format appears to be no format whatsoever.

3 - 95.7 the Party - top 40 (for my partner)

4 - 97.3 KBCO - classic/alternative rock.

5 - 99.5 the Mountain - classic rock

6 - 100.3 Mix 100 - suburban white people music

7 - 101.1 KOSI - suburban white people music for white people who think Mix 100 is too hardcore

8 - 101.5 Jammin’ 101.5, classic hip hop and R&B

9 - 103.1 Comedy

10 - 104.3 the Fan, sports talk (usually the station I listen to the most, at least during football season)

11 - 105.1 Kool 105, oldies. Also known as all the music I listened to growing up. *cries*

12 - 105.9 Alice FM, top 40.

Honestly, though, I don’t listen to terrestrial radio much because I have Sirius.

Is there anything more depressing than remembering what your 80s-playing classic station used to play music from the 50s?

1 - 90.7 Local NPR station

2 - 88.1 - community station with a full range of music (great Brazilian program on Monday afternoons, for example) and public affairs stuff

3 - 88.7 Jazz station based at a college at the other side of the river

4 - 103.3 classic hits

5 - 105.7 modern rock

6 - 94.7 classic rock

I really need to install the HD radio so I can get a few more jazz and classical stations, but I do have an iPod nano hooked up to the in-dash iPod/iPhone interface that I designed and built. And if all of that fails, I have some great MP3 CDs in the in-dash 6-disc changer with some of my favourite stuff, like the soundtracks from all of the THPS games (THPS2 forever!) and jazz stuff like Lyle Mays’ first solo album.

I have:

3 classic rock

3 top 40/current pop

2 adult alternative

2 different NPRs

1 local indie/easy listening station

And a duplicate of one of the classic rock ones because at this point I’ve run out good stations that come in clearly.

Nope. I mean I know I’m balding and have gray hair, but thinking of 80s music as ‘oldies’ gets me. Even worse, in a few years they’ll be playing 90s music and I might just die.

I don’t even use all my presets. My car gives me an FMa in addition to FM1/2 for a grand total of 18 presets.

None, well first of all my radio doesn’t have presets. But normally I don’t listen to the radio when I drive, unless it’s lot’s of highway. Then I’ll hookup my phone and listen to that.

It’s an aftermarket unit from, I guess, the early 2000's. You have to push the volume knob left or right to change the station. It’s super slow so unless your two stations are close to each other your basically stuck with one while your driving.

Pittsburgh sucks. our oldies station 94.5 is pretty good, we have a “new rock alternative” rock station that plays nothing but nirvana, pearl jam, and the black keys. Often times they forget that entirely and become an “old pop mainstream”station. 105.9 THE X! Also a dad rock station with a somewhat funny morning show, 102.5 wdve

It shows how bad it is when I usually end up on the variety station 96.9 bob fm because they actually play decent music.

There is a good station, 103.1 KVE but I think it is in west virginia or some shit because I usually can’t pick it up without some static.

100.3 WCLT HD2 (The Big Lick, local rock station, not set on the Miata because no HD radio)

104.7 WCLT (FM simulcast of The Big Lick)

99.7 WRKZ (The Blitz, Columbus rock station)

XM 37 (Octane, rock station, not set on the Miata because no XM (and my XM subscription is expiring soon anyway))

Note that I don’t usually listen to these - it’s kinda a “aw, crap, I’ve run out of podcasts on my phone, screw it, let’s switch to music” situation. And, in my immediate area, as far as reliable reception... it’s basically 100.3 WCLT (pop country), 100.3 HD2/104.7 WCLT, or 98.7/1430 WCLT (soft rock/sports (because 1430 is a simulcast of 98.7, you see, and 1430 used to be sports)).
