not a fan of 5 spoke / 6 lugs. If I were the designer I would have just covered the jugs

wheels are fine, it’s the rest of the vehicle that is questionable though.

The 4th gen 4Runner is a vehicle that I’ve always liked in theory and always hated whenever I’ve driven one.

Suspension is truck based, I believe.

some people really like those wheels. I see them on FZJ80's a lot. I frankly thing they are hideous. but then again I don’t like big offset in off road wheels.

interesting that its 6 lug, in 98 Toyota was supposed to have gone 5 lug on all their trucks. hmmm. but I guess thats why these work on 80 series. I just never realized they were 6 lug until now.

Yes, it’s a body-on-frame truck, which is fine in itself, but it creates some problems with space.
Since it’s a body-on-frame vehicle about the same overall size as unibody vehicles like the R50 Nissan Pathfinder and WJ & WK Jeep Grand Cherokee, there’s way less room inside, since the body is on top of the frame. To get decent headroom, the seats are way down on the floor, and you have to look way up and over the dash and hood. The seating position sucks. Visibility is kind of crap. Since this was before backup cameras were common, Toyota actually put convex mirrors in the upper corners of the cargo area so that when you look in the rearview mirror you can see what’s around the back.
The 4th gen 4Runner shares its platform with the Lexus GX470 a.k.a. Land Cruiser Prado, but the GX is much taller which makes for much more room inside. The 4th gen 4Runner is 71.1 inches tall and has 39.7" inches of headroom. BUT...that’s with the seats on the damn floor.
Compare that with the GX, R50 Pathfinder, and WJ & WK Grand Cherokee...
Lexus GX470 - 74.6", 40.2" headroom
WJ Grand Cherokee - 69.4-70.3" tall, 39.7" headroom
WK Grand Cherokee - 67.7-68.7" tall, 39.7" headroom
R50 Nissan Pathfinder - 67.9 - 72.7, 39.5" headroom
Basically, to get both decent headroom and normal, not-on-the-floor seating position in the GX, it’s a good 5+ inches taller than the unibody competition, and only has a fraction of an inch more headroom.

Tame 4runner.. wants to be released in the wild..
4th gens were my least favourite but they’ve grown on me considerably. When you look at the mileage/age/rust ratios in the used market they are actually pretty hard to beat.. Ltd is even nicer with the 4.7 - just watch out for the 2wd ones.

WJ MASTER RACE
Can that be a thing?

I suppose, as long as things like good build quality are not required to become the master race, and I get to say that as a former WJ owner.

Is there anything particularly rare about those wheels? I work at a company of 90 people and I see two sets of them every morning in the parking lot.

I don’t see them very often, but then again saw another truck with them this morning.
