Ok, this is not the actual picture, I was too slow to get it.
But at lunch pause, I went to grab some food, when an odor of burnt oil caught my attention. I turned my head and there it was, a yellow NSU Ro80! Glorious.

I’ve seen one in a museum before, but it’s the first time I see one in the wild

Nice spotting. You don’t see moving ones very often. There’s one moving one in Finland. According to rumors, it got the last unused factory spare engine when it was restored.

I think I’d drop a 13B in it and call it a day :)

Nice! I shipped one back to Japan last year with a tuned 13b Mazda engine and the original gearbox. Awesome car! Love it!

I remember that! I spent some time looking for a Ro80 after that article, but ended up buying a more reasonable 56 year old chevy

I’ve never driven a stock one... I think I’d be disappointed by the lack of power now that I’ve extensively driven that one. That tuned 13b was so smooth yet powerful it was awesome. It could have been a one gear car... Starting in third was no problem at all going from 0 to 230kph in just one gear. Felt completely normal to do it. Such a great car!

It would be possible solution.

Here you can register a +30 year car as a ”museum vehicle”. This gives you certain cost and tax related benefits. But this can be only done if the vehicle is in original condition. Some period correct accessories are allowed, but engine swap into a different model is especially prohibited.
