I am far, far too poor to afford even the first service on this nightmare.

What are your requirements?

Comfortable, nice features, probably something cool and with a posh badge, and won’t break every ten seconds. I actually think I know what I’m getting (more on that later) but it’s always fun to shop.

You probably want something like this

LS400/LS430 IMO

Has the 4l80e transmission, so at least you don’t have to worry about that breaking. Everything else though. . .

Might I suggest an E39?

Too expensive, and even if I were down for Jag reliability, the S-Type loaner I had did not leave a good impression.

XJ or e38 is what I would recommend. Most of the prevanos e38s are high mileage though.

Yes dear.

Probably about $7500 tops.

Do like.

You had the old ugly S-Type, this one is miles better, also more reliable and Ford Parts-ey.

I will probably go with something slightly cheaper to maintain.

An Infinity Q45 or imported Nissan President.

I was originally thinking, “I hear ya, Brother!”, but then I thought, “you should investigate a bit.” Depending on the individual car, they may not be money pits. I did a bit of lunch time googling over the Jaguar forums, and it might surprise you.

I’ll look into it, in that case.

I mean, I’d just go for the V8. But if you really want the V12, I don’t think any of us will stop you. I’ve always wanted to get a V12 E32 or E38

How did I miss this? V12 aside, you can get an X308 that looks nearly identical, but is faster for less than half the price and still come out cheaper after you budget in ~$2k for upgrading the unreliable bits.
