I’m in favor of it.
Thats paraphrasing former Tampa Bay Bucs coach John McKay, who when asked what he thought about his team’s execution, responded by saying “I’m in favor of it” because like me, they fucking sucked that day.
I had a good idea: before I paint my wheels black, let’s throw some Plastidip on there so if I hate it, I can just peel it off. What I didn’t realize is that Plastidip is the god damn devil.
It’s the thinnest spray ‘paint’ I’ve ever used, and if the Red Sox got half as many runs as I did they would have won today’s game by ten. I’m a pretty good spray painter, but I just couldn’t get it to sit flat for the life of me.
So what did I learn? As you can see from the picture, the black wheels with chrome lugs and repainted black hubs is a good look for the truck and I’d like to go with it. But I think it’s going to have to be paint, because the Plastidip doesn’t agree with me. I hope the stuff peels off as nicely as it’s supposed to.

It peels off only when you don’t want it to.

In fairness to me, that wheel I did it to is super gross.
Sandblasting might be required.

It’s probably not going to go well.

If you put on at least 4 heavy coats, it should peel well. As for getting it to lay down, if you let the cans soak in hot water prior to spraying, it’ll lay down nice and smooth. You need to wet coat it as well, but it will lay down nicely with some practice.
Also, the dip dissolver from dipyourcar is excellent at getting off plastidip.

I’ve also heard WD40 takes it right off, and I’ve got like a gallon can of that junk in my garage.

Haha true.
I dipped my shackles thinking it would be a good no slip covering. I let it dry then put the bolt through and it tore the dip all off at the end..

I like it - looks great with the white raised lettering tire and the chrome lugs.

Same here. I was pretty sure I’d like it but not positive, I think it’s the chrome lugs that really makes it work for me.

Wd40 breaks it down well but peel whatever you can first. Power washer does a swell job as well.
Can confirm if u got it on thick its not bad to peel. If not you’ll need the wd40 and elbow greese.

It’s on there thiccc like oatmeal, so hopefully it’ll be okay. Shockingly, I just went and looked at it and aside from one big run it actually settled down prettt nicely. I might try to do another one and see if I can do it well.

Its pretty forgiving stuff once you get it down. I’ve ripped bubbles off and redid the spot, and it blends right back in. Good luck!

The dipyourcar dip dissolver is excellent, but it seems like it’s just some sort of citrus solvent, something like goo gone or goof off should get the thin stuff off. I’ve done three sets of wheels now and if applied properly, it lasts and doesn’t peel, even after auto car washes. The downfall is remounting tires, I had to peel and recoat my S4 wheels after new tires got mounted. But it only took 10 mins per wheel to get them stripped and ready for the next coat. I was able to peel off quite a bit, then the little nooks and crannies I used the dip dissolver and wiped off the rest. I really like the stuff, but it does take a bit of practice to get it right. My q7 winter wheels were dipped and lasted through 2 winters before I sold it, and the wheel coating was still perfect. Same for the winter wheels that were on my S4, those have been through 4 winters now, three on the S4 and this past one on the S8. They are still near perfect, minor peeling around the lugs is all. I’m impressed with the stuff. The S4 summers had matte black for a while, then after the new tires, I went with the gunmetal metallizer topcoat over matte black. A nice gloss color. Oh yeah, I forgot about my new Pacifica wheels, those are done with the same gunmetal topcoat. So I guess that’s five sets. But it gets easier every time. And it protects the wheels nicely.
