It’s karma. The car gods are punishing them for jumping on the flat fender band wagon after Motor Trend beat that horse to death last year.

I said yesterday that driving this heap 1000 miles meant he had already won, and anything else is gravy. I stand by that. How many of us would’ve been able to make that happen? I would’ve noped the hell out of there when I found the frame patched with an old leafspring.

Oh come on now. David is a Jeep fanatic. Why shouldn’t he buy one because Motor Trend? Should nobody buy a Miata, because Jalopnik fanboys all over them constantly?

Doing 40mph in that thing for that distance is a endurance feat in itself I had a 84 CJ with a 2inch lift and I couldn’t drive that for more than 4 hours.

Man, that sucks. So do they just turn around now, or keep going and off-road the Raptor?

Hmmmm ok I will explain myself. This is gonna be long: I do like Jeeps. I help work on my friends’ XJ Cherokees almost every weekend, and this Sunday will be one of those days.  I pay for motor trend on demand because I go through a lot of automotive video content every day. They have made an unbelievable amount of flat fender content over the past year and it is very played out at this point. Anyone who follows motor trend closely (millions lol) will have seen countless 3 minute videos of Freiburger and Fred’s flat fender lawn ornaments, which all blend together after only a handful. There have been multiple full length flat fender videos too. There are just way too many other interesting off road vehicles out there to justify the obsessive flat fender coverage. So for that reason I was surprised and disappointed that yet another group of Auto journals that I follow have fallen down that rabbit hole. I’m sure he did want one of those vehicles but at the same time I can’t help but wonder if they also thought it was a good idea because they wanted to emulate the hopeless flat fender beater road trip Motor Trend formula.

The interesting thing to do would be to drag it out there, and try to quickly rebuild/replace the engine so it could have a little fun. Then David could try to torture himself driving it back to Detroit. I wouldn’t blame David if he just wanted to be done with it though.

It’s a long shot, but I’d love to see some random Jalopnik reader in the area just happen to have an engine available. That would be just the best thing ever.

I agree whole heartedly. I doubt many people, it anyone, drove their brand new CJ-2's 1300 miles at a shot back in 1948.
