When you can get a track day NASCAR for just as much.
Looks like I need to avoid Connecticut for a while or else this might follow me home...

What you are looking at here is probably the only 2012 Chevrolet Impala I would buy. It is a NASCAR race car with a ~2012 body on it and a chassis from “who knows when”. It was allegedly used in the Pit Crew challenge which was an event held during all star week at the Charlotte Motor Speedway a week before the Coke 600.
This car comes with a small block Chevy motor and transmission, the only crucial thing said to be missing is the fuel tank. It can all be mine for $4800 + however much money & time it will take to get it home (it’ll fit in the back of a uHaul - right?). The small block Chevy may not be all that fast or powerful (depending on the build), but most stock cars at this price are missing the things that make it move, change gear, stop, and/or function like a basic automobile.
So instead of buying a high mileage practical car like a 96 Accord, I can get a full running NASCAR racecar, and if I put a couple hundred dollars in I can make it run for more than 2 minutes.

Nah. Probably just a rolling chassis with a basic SBC/T10. Doesn’t have a VIN or anything.

Rip the body off and put an 80s Lumina body on it.
Still, old stock cars always seem like a great bargain to me as a track day vehicle.

I would expect that track ready SBC would want a full rebuild every 10-15 hours of operation. I doubt it’s an off the shelf crate motor.
Track days are great, but a full pit day every time you want to use it sounds like a headache.

It very well could be but with it being a show car and no team history or paper trail it has nothing to ride on to inflate the value, so I doubt it. Plus the engine could be a low power SBC just so that it can be moved on its own, the fuel cell is missing so clearly it cannot be run for more than a minute or two.

I guess it depends on what running gear is on it. From what I can tell, the pit crew challenge wasn’t a race, it was a skills competition.

If this was just for the pit crew challenge this wouldn’t be good for anything other than a show piece as is. This was made to be light so the crews could easily roll it down the course, it was never meant to see anytime on a track

Being a pit crew challenge car, it likely lacks many of the functional go fast parts as it’s laps were always intended to be through the pits for the camera and special event, never to race against another car.

That is the question. If this is a showcar and/or the Pit Showdown car it may actually have a stock crate motor in it. That car was used all day for the competition and never went faster than 60mph. A normal race engine would overheat.
Most show cars don’t have race motors in them simply because of the maintenance. All they need to do is replicate the sound and look.

I just found a clip from the challenge, they actually may not have been run at all, meaning they may not have had engines in them in the first place.

Which is why it is affordable...
Looking through the footage it appears these were used as dummy cars for the crews to start on. So I am guessing whoever decided to buy this put a real basic drive train in it just so it could move on its own and sound real.

It may fall under a custom build law or something. It’s probably fairly tricky in states with inspections I would assume.
