No clue. It doesn’t make much sense to me.

Kinja.
I had a post that appeared there for a few hours that very few people looked at/interacted with.

I think it weights stuff based on viewing “velocity”. If something starts to get views *quickly* based on its previous views, then it pops up. How it’s supposed to work: article gets read a few hundred times, then lies dormant, then gets linked somewhere - it’s hot again! How it really works, I think: something gets read about a dozen times, then through freak chance two people click on it within an hour or it gets search-engine indexed. WOW IT’S SUDDENLY WAY MORE POPULAR OMG SPAM THE SIDEBAR. This puts it in the sidebar, and makes people click on it, continuing its out-of-character fame, and putting in a “legacy” of being popular that makes it likely to rise again once it has.
The dumbest part - the “infinite scroll” thing causing people who read *any* article on Oppo to read the most recent articles, creating viewer velocity artificially, and sticking the articles to the sidebar/bottom bar. Right after the infinite scroll had loaded the article already. So, Kinja was making people read articles, which made the articles “popular”, which led Kinja to suggest reading those articles while they were reading those articles, dawg.
Kind of impressive.

Actually that’s a whole lot more involved than I thought it would be.

It’s a complicated system which quite frankly loses its mind when trying to manage blog posts on a site with as varied viewership behavior as Oppo. Huge numbers of posts, huge variety in post rate based on time of day, and viewership everywhere from a million down to maybe nine views ever.

Why X is a terrible bike.
Any of IDRIVEACL63AMG’s breakdown posts.
That one time Oppo almost fell apart because of a Fiesta sedan.

I have a screenshot about his lacklustre behaviour even before it all kicked off.
