OHC V8? 100 years more advanced than anything MOPAR.

OHC is high tech, bro.

Has this thing watercooling pipes going to each individual cylinder?

#1:
#2 I’ll never get why people get “OHC=high tech” stuck in their minds.
#3: Ram pushrod 5.7 liter V8- 395 horsepower, 410 lb-ft, 15/22 mpg.
Toyota iForce 5.7 DOHC V8- 381 horsepower, 401 lb-ft, 13/18 mpg.
Toyota’s really putting those “high tech” overhead cams to good use (rolls eyes)

Yep, also notice that it will never ever have a headgasket issue.

What about the ... I don’t even know? ... gasket between the cylinder and the ... crank block?

Oh yeah, hadn’t noticed this. I always enjoy open air rocker valves though.
How is the timing managed on this one?

magnetos, most likely.

Guessing a belt or chain on the backside. It’s a Packard aircraft engine.

if it’s like many engines with separate cylinders and crankcases, there’s a segment of the cylinder which slips into the crankcase. then, you only need a simple flat base gasket.

Oh, and this was a prototype before it was effectively banned from the series it was going to be made to compete in:

Surprised it even reached the prototype stage before that engineer was sacked for performing such witchcraft.

TIL Bevel shaft camshaft drive was a thing and why

Bevel shaft camshaft drive actually, interesting stuff

Is that what they’re called? “base gaskets”?
I suspected they were built like that, but knew they’d need some kind of gasket...
It seems like a practical design, aside from the difficult machining it would entail.

At the time Ford had this... and Olds this...

Of course, Chrysler has the one that looks the most cobbled-together and features unnecessary extra gears within the valvetrain.

Of the three I posted, they were also the furthest from production when the project was killed. The OW-43 basically got killed by the insurance+gas price hikes. It was way too much motor for the market, it was making something like 700HP.

Do you really believe them though? That’s 100 hp/L in 1969 XD
![]() 04/03/2017 at 10:52 |

700HP gross? Sure. Probably 450 by today’s measurements.
