The term “Car” often used for automobiles is short for “carb” which is in turn short for “carburettor.”
“Carburettor” is a corruption of the French word “carbeurettoir” or “that which runs on carbon.”
It is from this that we get the “low carb diet” which is actually a misnomer, as the “low carb diet” is actually an exercise regime where people are encouraged to walk more instead of using their automobile.
