Jalopnik/Gizmodo et al don’t control what ads you see. most every website contracts out to “ad networks” which use various tricks using cookies and sniffing a bit through your browsing history to determine what ads might be most relevant to you.
sometimes that has unintended results; for a while about a year ago if I read any news story on e.g. CNN or local news sites which had the word “gay” in the url or page title, shortly afterward I’d be seeing ads for “men 4 men” dating services.
