Apparently Sir Richard Branson is displeased that Alaska Airlines is retiring the Virgin America brand. This is a full-page ad from the back of the first section of the Seattle Times today.

I don’t know why Virgin Atlantic has their panties in a wad. Alaska is a dank airline. I mean, Virgin sold off the airline, anyway.

That’s a pretty cool photo. Too bad the print quality is piss poor. Do the Seattle Times’ other color pages look that muddy?

The original is not great, and probably not helped by my 5 year old Iphone...

Yeah Branson opposed the deal, but he’s a minority shareholder due to U.S. ownership restrictions. Hence him being a bit sour about it. I honestly thought that the Virgin America brand would live on as Alaska first class, but the Delta/Virgin partnership is a big sticking point (Delta is trying to muscle in on Seattle after pretty much abandoning it after the Northwest merger).

I’ve never flown virgin, but am an Alaska Airlines fan boy. They have never abandoned me or canceled one of my flights, like Delta and United.

He’s not pissed. He was in town yesterday promoting it. He was hamming it up for the local news. Dude just has a great sense of humor.

ha yeah it seems like it - the quote in the paper was something along the lines of “I decided I should be nice, but then I decided I should have some fun.”

apparently they are on the hook until 2040 irregardless of whether the Virgin America brand is used or not...

I thought it was funny, he was out on the tarmac with his ladies in feathers and boas in a downpour.

The local newspapers in AZ aren’t even in register half the time. You need 3D glasses to read them. That’s a lot of dark ink on that ad, though, especially for newsprint. You’ll have a rough time getting that not to look muddy on an offset press.

Alaska has a first class, and it’s better than anything on Virgin. You don’t even have to put up with purple mood lighting.

LOL yeah my first class days were a looong time ago, but Alaska was the best domestic F offering then, and I can’t see it being different now. Haven’t had a chance to fly Virgin America at all - but Virgin’s Upper Class has quite a good reputation.
