Guy in MB fanatics is selling an 02 SL500 Silver Arrow for $75k(!) I was a bit skeptical on price, so i decided to “do some research” and saw theyre not worth even half that. Insane pricing i think hes about 20 years off

Typo. He meant to say “don’t do your research on this car. Trust me”

Stickered for $97k, listed 16 years later for $75k.
Yup. That definitely seems like legit depreciation for a 16 year old SL.

Nice cars, but they all survived, and many of them are mint. Real world money would be hard to reach half this. I’ve read the 97/98 ones are pretty good, I like the pano option too.
And a dose of NJ attitude just because.

Now he can tell his wife “See I tried to sell it, I’ll just have to hang on to it a few more years”

People like this make me kind of sad. This guy bought this new, for nearly $100,000 in 2001 money.
He then drove it about 1000 miles a year.
Now he’s selling it and surely he doesn’t see it as anything but this thing that has massively depreciated.
He spent $100,000 on a car and didn’t even really get to enjoy it, because he was so concerned with keeping the mileage low and recouping his costs.

Meanwhile you can pick up a nice earlier 500SL for $10k easy, throw on some really nice period correct wheels and grippy summer tires, a mildly more exuberant muffler to unlock a little more sport, and a modern head unit that looks good (Blaupunkt Detroit 100 BT or Kenwood Excelon X500), and have a really nice cruiser for less than the cost of a new Sentra SV.
