The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got me thinking about other common mispronunciations that i would like to clear up

“Land Rover” Often mispronounced “Land Cruiser” “Cruiser” or sometimes “Jeep”

“Car hold”. Often mispronounced “Garage”

“Compacted remaindered animal feed”. Often mispronounced “food”, “subway” or “chicken”

Can you think of any other commonly mispronounced items?

Differential is pronounced like it’s spelled not pumpkin.

Are we so thick headed that we have to change every specific name for things to nicknames so we sound like hillbillies? Or are we afraid by calling things the proper names our friends might make fun of us?

I used to work for the professor of anatomy at a college of medicine. First exercise of the first class began with him writing on the board:

Disappear, disaffect, discombobulated, DISSECT, discover, dissolve, dismember, DISSECT, display, disfigure, dissent, DISSECT

Then he would turn around and make the class recite the list until they stopped saying “dice-sect” and started saying it “diss-sect”.
