With the mid- centruy american modern style coming on strong with a dash of retro desire, an original tanker desk is a prime candidate for restoration job and some paint to get you a great piece of functional furniture that looks great. I love this guys presentation style.

I had no idea that’s what they were called. Here’s my desk, don’t mind the mess....

I used to have one like the one pictured only a lot longer. It was heavy and beastly and my stupid parents just gave it away despite being mine. jerks!

I think it was like this.

now I want to find another one and paint it aqua and polish the hardware maybe get some pin striping done.

My plan is to take one apart, spray it shiny black and replace the top with a 70" stained butcher block top, or stained section of bowling lane.

right now, im about to pick one up at a university surplus house for $25. they have two of these. one grey , one beige, both with the curvy design than the angular like yours, so they could very well be a decade older.

When i can, after my move, the restoration will be a dark charcoal, polished hardware, and i’m still debating on a stained ikea butcherblock and sealed top, or reappropriated section of bowling lane. (right now it’s $35/lineal foot) It’s pretty cool to see what some have done.

This one has an ikea stainless steel top and the desk itself is WRAPPED like a car. sucker is nice.

Ive seen others painted black with polished stuff and dark stained tops, just super sharp now.

A few shops out there restore them with really nice colors and are getting 1500 at least for them. Done right, and with a hip area nearby, you could do well. Just look up tanker desk on pinterest or images and you’ll see quite a bit of interest.

thats really crazy. I dont know why hipsters are into them but I always liked how sturdy and made of metal they were. I will need to keep my eye out for them.
