Kinja'd!!!

Out riding my bike yesterday in the wind and someone asked me if I could listen for an “odd” noise coming from the rear of the vehicle.

Hmmmm. I bet you can hear it too.

It’s short but I couldn’t talk him into driving it around the block for me so I could shoot a longer video.

Were they like “Yo, Lemon Law Guy! Can I return this defective 20-year-old minivan? The clutch pedal is stuck!” #lehtofacepalm

bet one or both of the return springs broke inside the brake drum, and the shoes are binding everything up.

I’m no mechanic, but I think there’s something wrong with it.

Interestingly, the guy had no idea what I do for a living.

I tell most people I meet that I am a writer. They think that’s neater than being an attorney, I’m sure.

Looks like that tire is low on air. That must be it!

Besides the obvious elephant in the room, I have often noticed that this generation of Mopar vans tend to make an assortment of random noises when they’re idling at the school pick-up yard, ticking and wheezing and groaning—all noises that our Odyssey doesn’t make (its VTEC yo sounds pretty good at 5000 rpm though). Just 2000's Chrysler parts? Or bad owners?

Yes, rear tire is not spinning. Please stop driving it before someone drags a hole through the tire.

LOL that’s a new one!! Recently, I was asked to look at a colleague’s brakes because they were “making a funny sound.” The pads were bare metal and it screeched like a school bus.

This happened to my car a couple of weeks ago because Napa sold me the wrong brake rotors. I eventually figured it out after dragging my rear tires around the garage.

Almost sounds like a really nice burnout. Totally normal.

that’s wise, nobody gets asked to work “off the clock” more than mechanics, police officers, and attorneys.

the ticking- assuming you’re referring to that “errrrrkk” as you come to a stop- is the ratcheting solenoid packs in the transaxle; all Ultradrive-architecture transmissions do that by design.

the groaning is the accessory belt tensioner.

Makes sense. Noisy beasts, those vans.

note that I’m not saying the tensioner should be making that sound, it’s just that they eventually all do that.

They all probably do at this point. Throwaway cars, those Cloud Cars, LH Bodies, and their related minivans.

That’s a good thing. Did you ever tell him that his wheel was locked up on that corner or did you just let it slide?

“So did you hear the noise?”

Steve: “yeah, I dunno what that is, you should probably get it looked at though.”

That’s bad, I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of a failure like that. I guess either the caliper locked up or the wheel bearing.

I had the same thing happen to one of my vehicles a while back. A caliper got stuck closed on a disk. Shrieked like the devil.

Somehow he got it rolling a little later in the day. Not sure what it turned out to be.
