On
a ridge overlooking the Patapsco River near Ellicot City, Maryland are the ruins of St. Mary’s College. Last weekend, I went exploring there.
The former religious
school, which opened in the 1890s, prepared hundreds of young men for
the seminary until it was eventually moved to a nearby facility in the
1950s. The remaining structures were abandoned, and what little remains
continues to be reclaimed by the forest.
One thing I didn’t expect to find at the school site was an old VW bus, or what’s left of it:
The original school was torn down in 2006, but several outbuildings are still there to explore. They’ve been stripped of anything useful, and seem to be popular with the teenage drinking crowd now.
There’s also an altar which some call the “Hell House Altar” due to silly local legends about hauntings and pagan rituals. So far as I can tell, it was once quite beautiful, but is heavily vandalized now.
And then there was this gem on the old water tower:

If it were a barndoor, it might be worth...something. But it wasn’t.

Can confirm drinking occurred here. Partook myself prior to the school being torn down.
