“85 grand for a Toyota?! Outrageous!”

Kinja'd!!!

“Oh, 85 up t0 200 grand for a Range Rover? Well you get what you pay for you see, it being a premium blah blah blah...”

Hell even a sport can crack 112 grand. A SPORT! Does no one else think that the prices Land Rover charges and gets away with are straight crazy?!

Also funny and related. Land Rover will offer a “first edition” Velar for those lucky souls willing to trade additional money for the privilege of being the first to take a risk on a new product from a company with a history of vehicles thats are on the bottom rung of being well screwed together. And what does this exclusive privilege cost? 90 grand.

Neither are. Both are specialised vehicles not sold or meant to be sold in high numbers.

A Land Cruiser will pay for itself in no time for each time your Range Rover needs a repair.

I have no experience with either. Having said that, how do they compare? One is more reliable than the other and both are capable off road. But how do they drive? How do the interiors compare? Other things?

I got my doors blown off by a brand new Land Cruiser yesterday. Say what you want about losing the I6 and its smoothness/durability, but the new ones haul ass for something their size.

I spent time in a 2017 land cruiser and I would be hard pressed to think of something the interior is lacking in terms of luxury. It may not be as stylish an interior as the RR, but the leather is just as nice, the toys are all there the screens look great. If you need real wood, spend a little more on a lexus and you are still undercuting the range rover by a sizable margin. Its not that the Land Cruiser is lacking as a vehicle in the luxury department.

The way I would describe the acceleration in a 200 series is “deceptive”. it doesn’t feel quick ever, but holy crap am i really doing 90?

Because Land Rover has spent almost 30 years building the image of the Range Rover, Toyota has not. Same reason Ferrari can charge what they charge for their vehicles that make Range Rover ownership costs look comical.

Same reason the Phaeton failed, nobody wanted a $90 grand VW.

I guess the part that gets me is that a BASE range rover with a 340 hp V6 is the same price as a LOADED land cruiser and the land cruiser is “absurdly overpriced!” and the range rover isn’t. I get that the Range Rover is things that a Land Cruiser isn’t, but at a certain point do people just forget what money is?

Toyota needs to push the LC more. Right now you can buy a used mid-10s LC for around $35k with less than 100k miles. If more people lease new ones, it’d be even cheaper (maybe)!

Because this belongs in a $40k truck.

Kinja'd!!!

But it costs luxury car money. I know you pay for the durability but most people dropping $80k on a Range Rover swap them out for something new after 3 years. Dependability just doesn’t matter.

When you’re looking to buy a $100k+ vehicle, money means something different than it does to you and me. A childhood friend of mine married into money and at the wedding I interacted with the family and they wouldn’t blink twice to that kind of money.

Kitty wouldn’t be caught dead in a Toyota at the county club no matter how nice it is.

Edit: The wedding was held at a game reserve owned by one of their friends because theirs was in the midst of a remodel.

I don’t know if you’ve sat it in one, but the 2017's feel very premium inside. Way more than I was expecting. Those seats are the best things I’ve ever let my butt come to rest on. if you don’t like that, spend an extra 5 for the fancier version.

How soon do you anticipate replacing the current one you have with a new one? Or use the VW buyback cash for a used one now?

It also depends on a person’s personality. They can make several million a year but be the type that will drive a twenty year old Buick because they like it and turn around and buy a $60k heated spa pool.

I get that whole “upper crust” brand snobbery, I mean just the general public. a story about a 90 grand range rover sport dynamic would be met with lots of positive comments on range rovers, lots of reliability jokes and a maybe a “wait, it costs how much?” here and there.

Post a land cruiser story and 85% of the comments are either about the price, or defending the price.

I actually didn’t even think about any other Toyotas after I saw the Camry at the Detroit auto show. So no haven’t been in one. But I’d happily drop $5k more for that L badge. Looks like they tried at least.

now see I’ve driven a few tundra’s and they feel pretty snappy off the line in a way the cruiser doesn’t. The cruiser just kind of “arrives” at a speed. maybe its the permanent 4wd.

In fairness, I doubt Toyota or even Lexus for that matter regularly have their customer complain to them that their vehicles aren’t expensive enough. What a problem to have, huh.

Never underestimate how far the image concious will go. They defend the price because they hope to be able to spend that one day on a Range Rover.

The Land Cruisers image is the reason people bitch about it’s price, would be the same if all of a sudden Wranglers started costing upwards of $80k. It’s supposed to be a utility vehicle that is stripped down.

A Toyota for $85k? Why not, if you can afford a slightly used Century. New ones aren’t currently available (not even in Japan), and $85k wouldn’t have be enough either.

I could be but the other thing is I never take off quickly in my dad’s truck. What happens is its got so much power that you end up at speed without realizing it. and then pass speed.
