I has UMPC. 2009-era Samsung Q1 Ultra. 600mhz single-core processor and Windows 7 currently installing on it. Gonna replace the spinning disk hard drive with a 32gb 150MB/s CF card. Also, YUMI Multiboot is the shit for putting multiple OS installers on one flash drive. I now have Windows 10 64bit, Windows 7 64bit, Windows 7 32bit, Proxmox linux, Debian linux, CentOS, Hiren’s all on one flash drive. Friggin’ dope.

I have an Archos tablet thingamagic from that era that I got for free. Had XP on it and ran like a dog so I tried installing various lightweight Linux distributions but nothing worked well with the graphics and touch screen drivers. I haven’t used it in years, because the battery started to expand and I was afraid it would catch fire. I should dust it off and see if it behaves better with W10 or a newer Linux distribution geared more towards mobile devices.

Ouch that must be slow. I have 2009 era netbook with a processor (Atom Z520) intended for MIDs because it has a larger screen and Intel was worrying about cannibalizing the notebook market so wouldn’t actually let Acer use normal netbook grade Atoms in it, but even that thing is 1.3GHz, and is still dog slow with anything newer than XP.
Granted clock speed isn’t everything, my current has a 900MHz base clock (though it does of course turbo much higher).

Ah man I’ve got one of these bad boys, an OQO 02. I don’t have a working battery for it (and can’t seem to get one, like, at all) and it’s pretty useless these days wrt RAM and CPU but it’s an interesting artifact. It’s surprisingly comfortable to use, too.

Windows 7 is going to be painful on that man. I have a netbook with a single core 1.6 ghz Atom and that requires some pretty lightweight linux to be anywhere near functional.

600mhz? That doesn’t seem incredibly useful these days, though it might be OK with some form of Linux for basic stuff. Cool device though! I use Linux Mint and Puppy Linux on some of my machines! Puppy is very good at working on low-spec machines!

Win7 is perfectly happy to run on it. Going to just use it for emulation stuffs.

Nah, it runs fine once you strip out some services that aren’t needed.

Eh. With a few services stripped out and using a CF card as an SSD it actually runs quite well. The 4500rpm hard drive was a bigger bottleneck than the CPU was, really.

I can believe that. To be frank, I think the 1GB of RAM on the netbook is a much bigger issue on modern systems than the processor, it’s thrashing the swap pretty hard, and as you note these drives aren’t the pinnacle of speed.

My friends colloquially refer to them as “spinning dicks hard drives”

Fair enough. I’m a bit spoiled when it comes to PC hardware.

I literally just bought this to run NES and SNES emulators. Doesn’t need much horsepower, lol. I’m considering uber-stripping down a Windows XP installation for it and seeing if I can get N64 emulators to run on it.

Cool, will work well with the “SSD” as well...how much RAM on the little thing?

Ah, should be decently usable then! Can it handle standard-def Youtube at all? :P
