Today, I got our CX-5 and 6 their bi-annual oil changes at the Mazda dealer about 38 miles from our house. I go there because their prices are actually reasonable, my ass is covered as far as warranty stuff, and there’s an IHOP over there and not one here, so I eat pancakes while the cars are in.

Today, my friend drove the CX-5 over and I took my 6. Both got oil changes and the 6 got a tire rotation (the CX-5 gets its tires rotated at a local tire shop where we bought the tires).

They said my car needs an air filter and a cabin air filter and those together are like $100.00. First of all, the OEM air filter is $8.00 on Amazon. The OEM cabin air filter is $21 on there. And Mazda doesn’t recommend replacing either of them until 2 years or 25,000 miles. My car has 15,000 miles and won’t be two-years-old until this coming October. They also said my wife’s CX-5 needs an air filter and a cabin air filter, too. I’m going to check its air filter today but I changed the cabin air filter myself in August 2015 so it isn’t due until this coming August, as that’ll be two years.

They also said the CX-5 needs brake pads as the fronts are at 6 MM and the rears are at 3 MM. My friend and I are going to check those today, and order pads from Rockauto if necessary.

If I’d have said okay to everything they wanted to do today (including the oil changes and tire rotation), I’d be out $476.00 for the CX-5 and $200.00 or so for the 6. Cue eye roll.

I like this dealer (it’s where I bought the 6). They always suggest stuff like this (today’s suggestion was admittedly the highest I have heard) but they’re never too pushy about it. I have to admit, though, sometimes it’s hard not to laugh or chuckle when they suggest stuff like this.

Ehh on the Cabin Filter I would replace every year minimum as well as the Air Filter. Manufacturer service intervals are getting ridiculously long to the point where they are making the cars very disposable rather than taking care of them and making sure they run correctly forever. My LS400 has 305,000 on it because it gets taken care of and not ran until the absolute max with all of it’s services.

The pads were lower in the back? Can’t say I’ve ever seen that. It’s always the fronts that wear out way before the rears.

As for the cabin filter, it might not hurt to change it. I just changed mine out on my Civic after about 16k or so and it was a mess. They’re cheap enough, why not do it?

Oh, yeah, I’m going to go ahead and change them. But I’m ordering them from Amazon for $8.00. Haha.

It’s 75 degrees in February here in Kentucky so I think global warming has taken care of the whole pesky winter thing.

This is why the Service and Sales operations are separated. If Sales knew the Service shenanigans, they couldn’t sell cars in good faith.

Also Harvest Grain ‘N Nut are the best IHOP pancakes.

Had the dealership do the same thing when wife took the CX-5 in for oil change. Cabin air filter is dirty, you need to change it. After I get home and ask about how the oil change went, and $50 dollar cabin filter change, I tell her to never buy filters from there again. Quick search showed ~20 bucks for filter, and 2 minutes to change it.

Modern cars actually use the rears first, and then transition to the fronts as you increase braking effort. It reduces nosedive during gentle braking.

So, rear brakes wear out faster if you brake gently.

I dont understand. Are you balking at the prices they charge? FYI I have never paid for mechanic work so it all sounds outrageously expensive.

Also helps prevent the issue of the rear rotors getting rusted due to lack of use if driven gently all the time.

Yes. I can get all 4 filters (2 cabin air filters and 2 engine air filters) on Amazon for $37.48 and if I went with the dealer, they’d be around $250.00.

IF your traction control always kicks in to keep you from spining the rear tires, you wear the back pads out 1st

Anybody who says an engine air filter is a 2 year/25,000 mile service item is delusional, and that goes double for manufacturers. Air filters have been, and always will be, a 10,000 mile or bi-oil change item. Period. I don’t care what they’re made of or how much engineering goes into them, one spring pollen release and they’re toast.

Yeah. I’m thinking every year as well. I keep an updated list in my iPhone Notes app. I’m just going to do a calendar reminder to order the filters once a year from Amazon.

Yeah. I’m going to go ahead and change them, but like I said, I got them from Amazon for literally less than 1/4 what the dealer was going to charge and it takes approximately ten minutes to change both cars’ air filters and cabin air filters.

They should use the rears first. Every car I’ve ever worked on with 4 wheel discs has had far more wear on the front. Maybe they’re all just driven by assholes. Lol

Sure, the cost for the parts is $38, and the cost for the labor to install them is another $200. They are in business to make money, after all.

Getting an oil change today on my 98 civic. Service advisor comes over to say my trailing arm bushings are worn out. It’s got 260k miles. I’m sure they are. Guy tries to sell me two trailing arms for $400ish bucks each for the parts. I ask the guy to hold on for a second while I make a call. I hang up the phone and say, “The trailing arm bushings are $50 each and your parts department has them in stock.” This is why I never let my wife take the cars in for service.
