I’m replacing a couple door handles on a friend’s 07 Sonata (they have fragile exterior door handles for whatever reason). The handles come as bare, marked up plastic, so I painted them to match the car with some Dupli-Color spray paint. The results are satisfactory.
Now to order another handle to replace the one that broke while I was writing this post (no joke, got a message from my friend halfway through the first paragraph).

Do you have some good clear coat, something with a hardener? If not, I’d suggest you get some. It will hold up much better than the duplicolor clear. I did door handles on my truck many years ago and the paint started to scuff off after a few years. Same story with a replacement bumper, but the second time around, I went with a good automotive clear coat, and it made a huge difference, and gives a thicker protective layer. Just a suggestion.

It’s funny, I just saw a Sonata of that gen with a broken door handle.

Seriously, I walked out to ours one day and the rear driver’s side handle just fell right off. There’s a wrench sticking out of it at the moment that acts as a makeshift handle.

I used the Dupli-Color clear, so thanks for the heads up.

As far as I know, at the moment my friend’s Sonata can only be entered from the rear, driver-side door because all of the other handles are broken. The car may have 205K miles on it, but that’s still ridiculous.

Everything else in the car has been wonderfully resilient in our ‘10. Just that door handle thing...

My friend says the same thing about his.

I can relate! On my 2007 spectra5 hatchback the driver’s side door handle broke shortly after I bought it. fortunately it still had some warranty left and the dealer take care of it in an afternoon. I drove that car a hundred thousand miles without anything other than routine maintenance after that. I’d still be driving it if I hadn’t slid off an on ramp into a cement barrier. the airbags did their job and I walked away without a scratch though.great car!

I dipped my door handles recently. I dislike chrome.
