This is also a good metaphor for how we treat our elderly and veterans.

unfortunately not that rare. There are actually a good number of videos of this shit :(
There are even a few videos of cars that lasted a fairly long time before the engine died.

I have a coworker who worked at a dealer when C4C was going on. He said that the Ford 5.0 engines were always the hardest to kill along with GM’s 3800.

Which kind of chemicals did they use again? And did they put them into the oil?
In Germany, CFC cars were probably crushed, but all it took was to un-register them. So some of them are rumored to have been exported.

They replaced the oil with Sodium Silicate, liquid glass. Then put a brick on the accelerator until the engine seized.
Barbaric and honestly more wasteful than the cars themselves.

I can’t even look at this. If you go on YouTube, you can find one of a Mercedes 560SEC being done. It’s tragic. It was fine when people brought in second gen ford Explorers to trade in on a new Toyota Corolla, but nobody was excercising any Judgement whatsoever. Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, cars that are worth so much in parts because people actually want to keep other ones running.
But no. Old car. High emissions. Emissons bad. Blow it up.

I get so damn angry every time I watch one of these videos because so many running, serviceable cars in good condition were destroyed for no damn reason other than the government said so.

The thing is, those Explorers, Blazers, and Cherokees could have been a good car for a poor family or a kid looking for their first vehicle. It was never fine.

It wasn’t really about emissions, it was about helping the automakers out of their recent rough patch by pushing people to buy new cars and reducing the supply of used ones.
I think they emphasized the fuel economy issue much more than emissions, when they needed a good sounding excuse.

One guy who filmed them vented anger towards the program and displayed sympathy and regret towards the unsuspecting victims.
