What did Thomas Jefferson say about government and the press? Let’s see. This is an excerpt from a letter Jefferson wrote from Paris to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in 1787.

the basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. Was that before or after every media outlet in the world told stories strictly from their lean on the political spectrum? No news is just the facts anymore.

Certainly before the idea of “alternative facts”, offshore-based social media trolls, and outlets like Breitbart.

Since we are discussing former presidents, I learned something new about honest Abe today while grading papers.

The media was never unbiased. That’s a myth. It’s just that today, they don’t even have the good grace to be embarrassed about it.

Came to see a bunch of BS comments about how biased the media is, and was predictably disappointed to find them.

This is why education is important. Because then people wouldn’t be decrying an educational resource and institution — the only profession enshrined in the Constitution — as the “real” evil.

If you’re educated, then the bias is apparent and irrelevant. As the US is showing, you can’t have a lasting democracy without an educated society. Everyone and everything has bias. The people that complain most about media bias are those too uneducated to know what the facts are. That’s why Trump said he loves the uneducated. They’re pissed when someone else’s narrative doesn’t fit their own, but uneducated as to what is actually going on. Easy pickens for a populist like Trump.

I’m currently reading a book about Aaron Burr/Alexander Hamilton, and when Jefferson was president he did his best to suppress the opposition’s view in the press, so his idealism seemed to have faded.

a good book is Bad News by Tom Fenton. To sum it up 24 hour news, and corporate bean counters killed news. 24 hour news which filled it was tabloid crap (kardasians, OJ, ___dead white girl) and bean counters who closed all the foreign offices and fired the journalists. ever wonder why they repeat the same 6 facts? because they have no one to dig any deeper.

I think the biggest disservice is on how they’ll put up an “expert” instead of calling out the BS when BS is due.

They sat on their hands and instead of factchecking and calling out his lies they kept giving him air time, thinking “this will be a good show”.
