It feels as if there isnt a system for categorizing the actual design of wheels. Like if I wanted to find wheels that looked similar to these would I need to just look at every wheel on the market until they pop up? Do we need to create a wheel design index? Someone get Torch!

Is it not a website for Rota, XXR, Driftz, ESM, or whatever Taiwanese or Chinese knock-offs?

I could see something like that. Maybe start with broad categories like number of spokes, or lug pattern... Well, come to think of it, yeah of course lug pattern would have to be first. Okay, so lug pattern, then spoke count after that... then what?

If you’re looking at designs only, perhaps lug patterns should be ignored? I say this b/c lug patterns relate only to fitment, and b/c aftermarket companies often make the exact ame wheel with different lug patterns, offsets, etc.

Rim diameter and width. Center bore. Offset.

Spoke diameter, whether it tapers towards the lip or the center, negative space, finish, inserts, design category for spokes, empty space, and lip — traditional, starburst, wire, branching spokes, grid, pendulum — it would be a hell of a project but I think it needs to be done honestly...

I’m kind of torn over that. Strictly speaking, if the focus is mainly on the artistic variety of different designs, then yeah, lug pattern is just a technicality.
But on the other hand, there are some wheel designs out there that are only available in specific lug patterns. Someone who’s searching for wheels to fit his or her car needs to start their search by looking only at wheels that are going to fit that application.
Take Torq-Thrust wheels for example. The closest thing to a 4-lug version that I can find is a 4-spoke wheel with a somewhat similar shape to the spokes. I’m not sure that those count as “Torq-Thrust”s.

I think you did a great job of pointing out that we need to separate terms for “wheel design” from terms that describe “wheel construction.” Lug patterns and finishes are in the construction part that you would shop however the spokes being “forward directional from the passenger side” would describe the design.

Agreed. If you are doing a taxonomy of wheel designs, the technical specs like lug pattern, diameter, etc. would be at the lowest level, since they are largely irrelevant to the design chosen.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

And of coarse wheels, that are tone, tone, or has painted inserts need to be sperate.

I guess it depends on what side you’re starting on, yeah. Perhaps having ‘toggle options’ (i.e. organize results by design/by fitment/by construction/etc.) would be the best way to approach this. That way, you can have everything displayed in front of you based on the point of your search.

I’ve for a book about wheel design, mostly focused on spoked wheels. It’s all heavy engineering and theory though.

Oh, I totally forgot about directional wheels! (And I used to drive a T-Bird with fanblades on it too haha.)
Yeah, that’s a pretty important element that should probably be somewhere near the top or middle of the category pyramid.

You don’t need to look at every wheel, just post to oppo and wait for someone more knowledgeable to come along! At least... That’s what I’ve done... Even found out who made a one-off prototype wheel!
But yeah the database idea is very cool. Hard to implement though
