Late last summer, China Airspace Industry Group !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to the AN-225 Mriya (Dream) heavy airlifter from the original manufacturer, Antonov. The Chinese plan to finish the incomplete second AN-225 airframe, on which work has started and stopped multiple times, and then likely begin production on new airframes.
The second, incomplete, airframe.

That is a BIG plane.
I didn’t realize how big it was until it was next to the smaller airliners...
I also love how China will buy a 30 year old design, and doesn’t have the engineering capacity or national pride to want to engineer a Chinese heavy airlift.

My old man saw that thing at Farnborough or Paris in the early 90s when he was in the business. He said there’s just nothing like it. Sort of like what would happen if Howard Hughes and Leonid Brezhnev were friends.

I would love to see it in person. I’ve seen the C-5 many times and I never get over how huge it is.

My dad loves to remind me about NASA’s old colloquial definition of perceived velocity: The time it takes for an object to travel its own length. That’s why small jets (BD-5J is an extreme example) look like they’re supersonic at 300mph, while the C-5 looks like it’s barely moving.

I saw it take off a year or two ago. It’s amazing something that big can fly

It’s fairly practical, I guess. They already know it works, so why spend the money designing their own when they can just finish that one and build more like it.

I wish I could tell what the airplanes on the sides of it are to get an idea of the scale. Clearly it is huge, but needs more bananas for scale in the picture.

those iphones aren’t going to airmail themselves overnight. With all the issues with batteries I wonder if they’ll be banned fro airmail.

I just find it funny that China doesn’t have the ability to engineer or design something more practical then a 30 year old Soviet design,
