Hit and Run

My girlfriend was involved in a hit and run this afternoon. The pickup in front of her had no brake lights and came to a very sudden stop, causing her to hit him. She pulled over and he sped off, presumably because he knew his lights were busted and/or he had no insurance. Nobody was hurt, but the car might be totaled, depending on the frame.

I’m just glad it wasn’t my car again.

(But seriously, the important thing is nobody got hurt.)

Time to invest in a dashcam...?

I say that but don’t actually have one myself...

She might be lucky he sped off... Cops would probably not be receptive.

“Why did you hit him?”

“His brake lights didn’t work!”

“So you didn’t see he was stopped? How fast were you going where you couldn’t stop?”

And then the situation worsens from there.

She’ll get a ticket if it’s anything like where I live. Always your fault if they catch you...

She’ll still get a ticket, I’d bet. They love writing those no matter what the situation.

rearend is ALMOST always the other’s fault. In TX in March we will no longer have safety inspections... no Bueno. I turned into a car with no front indicators many years ago....

They turned infront of me. their fault for not signaling.

I got the ticket.

I don’t want to go TOO much into detail, but my above post and your reply are things I’m intimately familiar with.

Good thing you got the police report, though if you hadn’t she could have claimed someone backed into her at a parking lot... Insurance companies don’t seem to like to cover much on the person doing the rear-ending, fault or not, unless there’s dashcam or other outside evidence.

There are so many people who drive without brake lights (and other lights), that the cop probably found the “But his brake lights were all out” to be plausible.

Yeah, he said that the fact the guy ran off was pretty incriminating.
