never was a big fan of the Karmann Ghia... much rather have a 2.0fi 914 even if it looks like a lawnmower w/o a handle.

Is BaT limited to stuff that doesn’t run? (Hence the site name)
Or are they sellouts like Facebook and just let anyone use it?

Years ago, BaT just had links and short blurbs about interesting cars being sold (running or not) that the staff or readers found online. Pretty much all of them had either unusual option combos or engine swaps, or were cars rare enough that you’d have to search nationally (or internationally) to find the example you wanted or just a good example (ie Lancias, Crosleys).
They then came up with BaT exclusives, where people submitted their own cars for sale, exclusively listed on BaT, which morphed into the auctions that people link to here on Oppo all the time. It started out as three or four days a week with a few each day - now they have what used to be a week of auctions every day they auction. Instead of mostly blog posts linking to listings found elsewhere, most posts now announce another auction.
I used to visit and very rarely comment on BaT, but then the sheer volume of auctions got out of hand and the ‘British/Italian cars are all unreliable’ comments got tiresome. I felt that probably jumped the gun a while back when they started listing lightly-used newish (2000s) sports cars (Corvettes, 911s, AMGs, etc.). Sure, those are vehicles that enthusiasts buy, but they were no longer uncommon classics that you’d have a hard time finding locally.
While I understand that those vehicles have their audience, it really opened the floodgates for people with a rarely driven 2004 911 to think that they could all submit to BaT Auctions and overwhelm the type of cars originally featured on BaT.
Just my opinion though, I understand if you disagree.

Fantastic summary, thanks. I’m with you — sites like that should try to retain some uniqueness. A late model 911 or Corvette has plenty of places to be sold (and lots of competition). It sounds like BaT is still catering to its original audience but has added a ton more — not unlike my Facebook analogy. It was intended for a “.edu audience” because otherwise they wouldn’t have named it facebook.
I’m not against expansion, just that maybe those two sites (and others) should simply create sister sites instead of diluting their name.
