I probably should have included “not a convertible” in the list of buzz-killers...

What is cheap? $2000? $6000?

I am biased, but I would look at a Volvo C30. Inexpensive, easy to work on, safe and fun. Can probably find a manual for about $7000.

7th-gen Celica? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Celica#Seventh_generation_(T230;_1999–2006)

Newer models than 2002, manual, coupe, insurable, Toyota reliability, probably not that expensive?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or one of the later facelifts of the Hyundai Tiburon with the Turbo 4-cyl? The V6s are apparently very understeery.
Kinja'd!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not a coupe, per se, but what about an MC-generation (2006-2010) 3-door Hyundai Accent hatchback like mine? Not a huge performer, obviously, but they can be had for peanuts, are mechanically tough, the bodies hold up well to rust, have 5-spd manuals as an option, would be cheap to insure, and meet your year criteria?

I’m assuming he doesn’t want to spend money on gas so Civic or an Accord maybe? V6 Camaro would be fun but that would be north of 10k. Personally I’d get a beater Saturn with working heat.

If you relax that age requirement, a ‘90s Volvo 240/740/760/940 would probably be just as safe as some low - end early 2000s car while being more luxurious and reliable.

Really, there are very few coupes left in the “standard” car world other than Civic’s.

safe bet (I’ve owned several hondas of various ages). His brother has one, though, so -1 on the sibling scale

I think he’d like a turbo-4 for the cool factor, even if the six is more hp. I’d have to look into Tiburon repair history. I’m not excited about toyatas, probably a hangover from too many crappy 80's toyota boxes.

high in the running right now. There’s a couple available in the $5-6k range, better styling than the hondas or toyotas... could be a sleeper for the win

that -would- fit my cheap-for-me bracket, but not my cheap-for-him bracket... so If i bought that, he’d be stuck with my auto 4cyl accord, which fails to tick any of his preferences :(

curiously, there’s only one for sale in a 75mi radius and it’s a 2013, which means too many $$. I’ll keep looking, because I hadn’t considered (remembered!) a volvo coupe

The engine and trans on the Tiburons are supposed to be fairly tough. Not sure how the bodies hold up to rust or the other parts of them - don’t have any experience with them!

I just added more to my above post, but in case you miss it - It’s not a coupe, per se, but what about an MC-generation (2006-2010) 3-door Hyundai Accent hatchback like mine? Not a huge performer, obviously, but they can be had for peanuts, are mechanically tough, the bodies hold up well to rust, have 5-spd manuals as an option, would be cheap to insure, and meet your year criteria?

The Accent hatchbacks look like they are all 4-door cars, he’s really looking for that 2-door coupe styling. Curiously, no one has recommended a Mazda (other than the miata!) and I originally started this search with a mazda 3 hatchback. (again, 4 doors not preferred) so the Accent, Golf, etc... hatchbacks are only in play if he relaxes the 2-door coupe preference. Thanks for the suggestion, though

you had me scratching my head on that one, well played! Pontiac grill openings, Tibureon hood, Honda spoiler, Toyota 5-spoke wheels.... But the color-match window frame for the doors and the blacked out frame for the rear windows really bugs me.

E46? They’re reliable and great to drive, and no more expensive than any other import to maintain, at least at an indy shop.

E46 - not many to choose from under $10k, I’d need a good PPI to take a risk on a low price one, so I’m thinking I’ll wait until I can afford one as a spare car rather than his dd
