Because this is an accurate depiction of me when I’m driving, jamming out to my favorite tunes, when suddenly ads.

iHeartAuto was my go-to app. Now since I have Prime (THANKS GRAND TOUR) I have a bunch of playlists on there, artist stations that are similar to Pandora, and when offline I downloaded a shit ton of music to my phone.

This is why I have always had music files downloaded locally to my phone and plugged in via AUX or bluetooth while in the car. I have a 128GB microSD with a TON of music on it so it never runs out. I made it across the country for 10 days/4000 miles of driving with just that music playing. But in my STi, I only have a 6CD changer and no way to plug in my phone. Still have not even tried FM radio though because I cannot stand ads. Same reason I do not have cable at home. I’ve been considering swapping out the head unit just to get phone input.

How is amazon music? Did you pay for the upgraded one or just the regular one? I also have prime but havent explored all of the benefits outside of shipping, photos, and video. Can amazon music save music to an SD card? I would find it useful to do that but totally useless if it has to use internal phone memory.

Top Gear’s dorks didn’t know how to switch-off radios? Pathetic.

Yeah, my least 2 old cars have had aftermarket head units with AUX/USB/Bluetooth. I’d recommend it.

I have just the basic one that comes with Prime. It has 80% of the music I am looking for to download.

You CAN download the music to a SD card, I use the Amazon Music app so they’re not traditional music files.... I’m not sure what they are, actually. But there’s an option to store them internal or ex:

I’ve always been happy that the ads on Pandora free are so much shorter than I’m used to on radio.

I accidentally signed up for a Pandora Premium (their attempt to compete with Spotify) trial because of the constant pop-ups in the free tier. I was trying to skip a song or something and accidentally hit the thing to do the trial. Took me a couple days to realize I hadn’t heard an ad in a while.

I like Pandora’s radio functionality more than Spotify but Spotify is better for discovering playlists and albums and such. The kicker is Spotify lets you sign up for a family membership for $15/month vs. Pandora you have to upgrade individual accounts. My wife has also expressed interest in some kind of streaming pay service but it’d be $20/month for each of us to do Pandora Premium instead of the $15 for Spotify.

$5/month is no big deal but it’s the principal of it.

well yeah as long as I am the one installing the headunit. Purchasing a car with one already is always a basket case of bad wiring for whatever reason. I intended on doing a nice double din android head unit install since that would be pretty useful. Just gotta find one that isnt crap.

If for some reason you want to add an aux or other input to the stock head unit try Jazzy Engineering.

I’d probably just get a decent double-DIN aftermarket headunit instead.

I hadnt looked into options like that yet. I know my Miata had something similar to that but it was overly expensive, $100+ so I might as well just buy a headunit at that point. I just put an amp in the Miata and bypassed the headunit entirely, but that is not the cleanest way of doing things. The sound system in the STi is perfectly fine, just needs a better input than CD. That Jazzy ones seems interesting though, a very clean solution to that problem. And not too pricey either.

My 9-2x actually came with it installed by the p/o (or whatever shop they had do it) and you wouldn’t be able to tell it wasn’t factory.

Unless you’re really wanting to save some cash and/or keep the factory head unit, I think an aftermarket double-DIN head unit is the way to go. I know speaking from experience I’m lazy and would much rather connect my phone to my car over bluetooth than have to plug it in every time. Also an aftermarket head unit will probably have a more powerful amp to drive your speakers. There are a ton of double-DIN head units to be had for $120 or less.

Right but my pandora is already fine-tuned to my taste after years of finessing. Don’t want to start over.

But Spotify lets you just listen to an album or Top tracts from a specific artist. It’s not so good at doing Pandora’s job of picking out a playlist for you. But if you want more control over your music, and more variety it’s the way to go.

Yeah, I am looking into some of the aftermarket android auto units. Those seem like the way to go to have a seemless experience. Or perhaps just a headunit running on Android, but those can be a bit buggier. It’s a little pricier that way but it would be much more functional and easier to use I imagine. I generally prefer the single DIN with buttons layout to keep things simple but I would be happy to use the fancy stuff if it works right. The car takes a double din without any sort of adapters and it seemed SUPER easy to take out the stock unit. Barely any trim even needs to come out of the car!

It seems like more effort honestly to deal with the Jazzy adapter so I would just pass on that idea. Plus with an aftermarket unit I can eventually upgrade the speakers, maybe add a subwoofer, and enjoy music more. This car actually has the space for that stuff so it would be nice.

Nice! Definitely so lovely when its not a botched install. The 92x I had looked at also had a clean double din android install. Trying it out on the test drive made me kinda want one.

For the most part the double-DIN head units have gotten away from crazy looks and buttons. Like this Pioneer is pretty clean and simple, and you can change the color of the lighting to match your dash.

That is quite nice. Its like a single DIN but in double DIN size. Good idea!
