...who’s never seen or heard of Raiders of the Lost Ark . I made a reference to the Ark from the movie and then had to explain it to her when I got a blank look. It sometimes takes me by surprise when I meet someone who doesn’t get what I think is a ubiquitous pop culture reference and hasn’t been holed up in a bunker on a Pacific island since the war.

When I mention that a certain line or action is from a movie or tv show or song they look at me like I’m some kind of alien.

The Austin Symphony recently performed the scores to the first Harry Potter movie and the first Star Wars movie. One of the musicians in the orchestra hadn’t ever seen either movie. Hard to believe, but he said he just never watched science fiction or fantasy movies.

I didn’t grow up watching older films or listening to older music, but I search for them to be a more well-versed person, that, and a lot of it is better than stuff today.

I was raised in a home that my friends and I occasionally refer to as “The Shelter”. I have seen Raiders , but there are plenty of TV shows and movies that normal humans my age watched in the late 80s and early 90s that I’ve never seen (born in ‘78, driver’s license in ‘94).

I fear that the current generation is about to hit that point where its very apparent the next generation doesnt know what cool and pop culture was.

My brother almost certainly doesnt know the opening to fresh prince. And I shamefully only saw pulp fiction a couple years back.

Without power players like disney keeping a thing relevant its really up to chance what will stay known.

Am 20, parents emigrated from Asia, where LaserDisc was huge in the 80s and 90s (it apparently didn’t catch on elsewhere).

Unfortunately, the LaserDisc player is currently broken, and we don’t know who’ll fix it.

Wife has never seen a Bond film, Indiana Jones, or Star Wars. We were both born in the late 70s, so I find this inexcusable. But at the same time I also found it really refreshing.

I guess it can happen. I met a someone last year that claimed to have never heard Elvis. I rectified that, but, still, some of these shared pop cultural experiences, its like you have to try really hard and go out of your way to avoid them.

I used to have a manager who I loved and we’d try and fit in as many movie lines into a meeting as possible, before others caught on. There was one co worker who would never get any of them. Comedies, action movies, major classics. nope not one of them. Casablanca, gone with the wind, jaws, star wars, any mel brooks movie.
