I’m 9 hours into this train ride, 7 of which have been in complete darkness, and I’ve got 3 hours left. I hate everything.
You can’t not love this thing
I like riding the train, but this 3pm to 3am route is pure awful. I don’t sleep well/at all in moving vehicles or around strangers, so I’m basically a zombie at this point. I am really not looking forward to having to drive 30 minutes home at 3am.
Luckily the guy sitting next to me is really nice, and I now know most of his life story. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t actually hate people. I’m just fairly OCD and the most of the world is chaos.

Thanks for Mark VII race car! Brings back some great childhood memories. Enjoy some XR4Ti and blurry IMSA Thunderbird for your time :)

That Merkur must be appreciated from behind. Truly a thing of beauty.

If America were half its size and got decimated by war 70 years ago, trains would be awesome. But it didn’t, so they aren’t.

Or we actually invested in them instead of forcing them to run on worn out freight line.

Problem is there are so few places that proper investment would even make sense. For long hauls, Amtrak is already twice as expensive and a quarter the speed, door to door, as most airlines (depending on route, obviously). I can’t imagine it going even higher.
I love riding trains, but it’s more just the change of pace and the history/nostalgia for me.

From Wichita to Chicago the Amtrak was ~2/3 the price of a flight. However, it took 12 hours instead of 2-4.
