Target is having the 32GB iPhone SE on sale for Black Friday for $99. It says that it’s for Total Wireless, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to buy this and just use it on AT&T. My parents are both using iPhone 5s (not 5Ss, but the original iPhone 5) and like the size, and this seems like it might be a good upgrade for them.

Carrier iPhones come locked to a network and can only be used on that network.

Looks like it’s TracFone. They are known to lock their phones AND their SIM cards. I remember chatter about how you can’t even take the SIM and put that into another unlocked phone.
Thank goodness SIM locks are history in December in Canada.

That just means they will charge us more for the phone.

Possibly, but if they do that buying outright would start to become more attractive. Whatever it takes for people to start doing math is a good thing.

you can almost always cancel after 30-60 days without further penalty, but yes — you’ll have to get a Total Wireless account and suffer through it. $199 deals for the SE come up all the time with only modest restrictions. FatWallet is the best source for tracking these deals.

Just read it’s locked to total wireless. Oh well.
