Just another boring, everyday car. Nothing special.

Looks like your average workload to add wiper fluid for a Merc.

What’s the story behind tearing apart the top end???

Man, that engine bay looks pristine.

Probably had to change a headlight bulb.

I want to walk in to shop and do exactly why you never let people walk into the shop:
OOH, WHAT’S THAT!?
OOH, WHAT’S THAT!?
OOH, WHAT’S THAT!?
OOH, WHAT’S THAT!?

Ahh, the Mercedes oil change.

Head bolt?
![]() 11/21/2017 at 16:32 |

Cabin filter needs to be removed to add washer fluid on this car. Apparently washer fluid is superfluous on a Black.

Looks pretty silver to be black..........
I’ll see myself out.

Owner wanted head bolts replaced preventatively and insisted on doing head gaskets at the same time. Original head bolts on the first couple years of these were a known issue, they would break at the bolt head and relieve tension on the gasket. So coolant and oil would mix, or coolant would go into a cylinder.

Excellent maintenance history, very particular and savvy owner, low miles.

Are wearing out. Time for new ones!
![]() 11/21/2017 at 16:39 |

Blinker fluid flush actually. The blinker fluid has an external cooler and the pump for it mounts under the intake manifold.

Kind of surprised that AMG goofed on the head bolts. Seems like an unusual place to cut corners.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 16:40 |

I think it was more of the supplier screwing up the metallurgy.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 16:42 |
|
Yeah. Though no actual failure yet. He just wanted it done to prevent a future issue. Three were looking pretty rough, cams just starting to show a bit of wear, and two cam adjusters have a bit of play. So he’s buying all new cams, lifters, and adjusters to compliment the head gasket and bolt replacement.

Oh, and when you finally decide to buy a C63, make sure it has black plastic valve covers so that you don’t have to worry about the engine.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 17:00 |

This, for some reason, looks more expensive than my upcoming engine out service
![]() 11/21/2017 at 17:05 |

Probably is. We might do a little extra to this at the same time. Total bill is currently around 15, might be around 20 by the time we’re done.

I just had one and the pain is real.

Well it’s German wiper fluid so you know it’s good
Step 26: remove motor mount to access washer fluid cap

That seems about right for basically a top end rebuild on limited production car. It’s always nice to see owners of nice cars be proactive with the maintenance.

Here is a handy photo reference. First, the Correct C63 Engine To Buy, as photographed in my driveway. Please note black plastic valve covers (post-head bolt issue build) and dark gray intake manifold (performance package engine).
Now, here is the Wrong C63 Engine To Buy, as found on the internet. Note the silver valve covers (boo) and lighter intake manifold (hiss).

“Excellent maintenance history, very particular and savvy owner, low miles.”
And yet...here we are.

This is good to know. I’m trying to get back into the oil industry right now, so me getting an AMG might happen sometime soon. I’m sure if I’m in the market I’ll ask you what to look for.

Exactly!

Bro, it’s a mere 15 grand of preventative maintenance. I mean what’s 15 grand these days anyway? Lint in pocket, I tell you hhhwat.

Yeah definitely don’t mean hundred.

After how many miles?
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:24 |

I imagine that’s still cheaper than the head bolt failure and a new motor!

Like a brick through a window?
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:25 |

The best part is that whole car will only be worth $15k pretty soon.

He does. Great guy. And to everyone else reading this, I liked him before he ever spent a dollar at my shop. First time I met him we talked about car stuff for a couple hours. Turns out he was feeling me out as a tech!
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:29 |

A lot of times, if you catch it in time, you can save the motor when the bolts fail. But yeah, a reman motor from Benz is up around 40k if memory serves.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:29 |

Still about the value of my 3 combined.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:30 |

Precisely.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:32 |

You’re not supposed to ask that! 12k. The really aren’t that bad, just beginning to wear. They could probably go many more tens of thousands of miles before having any noticable symptoms. But early warning signs are there and he wants to take care of it before it’s a problem. Unfortunately it’s a known issue on early engines.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 21:34 |
|
I’ve tried being subtle. People just misunderstand. Which makes me want to put a brick through their window.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 22:07 |

So I’m sure you’ve answered this a million times on here, but how is the reliability on the later 6.2L’s? My wife keeps bugging me about replacing my manual crossover an automatic sedan and for some reason my brain keeps interpreting that as E63. I think 2010 was he last year for before the turbo. I can certainly afford the car, but I’m not so sure I can (or want to) afford repairs if things go out.
![]() 11/21/2017 at 22:25 |

Interesting. Design flaw?

2010-2011 E63 are awesome, in every way, and very reliable (not just for an AMG). Those would be my personal choice. Those both have updated engines. I haven’t really seen any issues on the updated engines. RPM made a post in here showing the differences between early and late. Biggest costs involved with owning one will be brakes and tires. I’ll give you a more in depth run down if you get serious about one, and even check service history if you’re really serious and get me a VIN.

Thanks! Not serious yet, but they’ve always tempted me. I’ve been a fan of MB V8’s since my aunt took 16 year old me for a ride in her brand new black on black W220 S430 in 2000. Ever since that and reading a C&D article about the W210 E55 around the same time I’ve always wanted a big V8 Benz.
![]() 11/22/2017 at 10:32 |

I had a similar experience with an XJR around that time. Still love them. But bought my 210 E55 instead because reliability, and well, I work for Benz!

Awesome. Just as it is great for a customer to have a good tech/shop (I have a good one here too), it is nice for the person doing the work to have a good/understanding customer.
