A friend of mine recently sold his MGB, and like every other person with a British car, had a bunch of spare parts laying around. For lack of being able to get rid of it, he gave me a dismantled transmission. After work today he stopped by and dropped off the case, one thing lead to another, and now it’s a lamp.
We were able to secure the post of a broken lamp to the output bearing with some washers/nuts and feed the cord out through the clutch fork opening. The rest is just normal transmission/lamp stuff. Need to get some rubber or felt feet to put on it so I can set it directly on the tile floor in the basement.

You should make it such that the gear stick controls the intensity of the light and it’s off when in neutral

He doesn’t have any spare shifters left (has sold off just about the rest of the parts) or we discussed making it a 3-way bulb controlled by gear position.

Hey wait, not all british car owners have... *checks garage, british car; checks shelf, lots of spare parts* hmmm. Well admittedly I don’t have a spare transmission for my MG, but I have a spare trans and two spare engines for my old Buick...

How many lumens can an MG transmission hold up under? How does that compare to a TH400?

I mean, better some parts than whole spare cars?

Awesome!
Though, now I have songs by “The Fixx” stuck in my head...so, uh, thanks I guess...

Yeah, I certainly know of a few MG guys who keep entire spare cars. The metal is so thin if they are left outside to rot, they go really fast...

Risky (I’d like it to keep working) but clever!

If my 1000W halogen shop light breaks and I find a spare TH400 case laying around, I’ll let you know.
