Watch as lightning strikes this KLM 777 as it takes off. I think the video of the roll and takeoff is just as impressive as the lighting.

The KLM livery looks really good on that 777, too-

Do airports generally film every takeoff and landings? For insurance purposes??

I am most impressed by the fog in the low-pressure zones at the fan intakes and over the wings. Neat.

It’s gorgeous. One of the true classic liveries. I just remembered that I have this KLM A330 that I photographed in DC back in 2014. If you go to the Udvar-Hazy Center, which I strongly recommend, you can view int’l flights arriving at IAD right from the parking lot.

I also caught this Lufthansa 748.

Exactly. Aerodynamics in action. That’s an amazing spotting spot, too. I’m not sure, but I think it’s Amsterdam. I’d fly over there just to take pictures.

No, this is just an enthusiast out shooting film. Some of us take stills, some take video. It’s the only way we’d get these great videos of lightning strikes, crosswind landings, etc.

Go to you YouTube and search “plane spotting”. I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit watching videos of planes taking off and landing.

Assume based on all the KLM planes that it’s Schiphol.

This one’s even better.

That, and the terrain. Or lack of it.

I have a pretty good view right out my office window, although Kinja is being a butt on the airplane photo (it wasn’t in a 90 degree bank I promise).

The Udvar-Hazy museum is high on my bucket list - I haven’t been yet. :(

1. those turbo fans are huge

2. low pressure zones on the tops of the wings are cool (get it?)

3. opps I crapped my pants

4. nothing to see here, just move along like we didn’t just get struck by lightening.

It’s neat how the lightning flows out through the static wicks on the ends of the wings. That and the condensation in front of the fans on the takeoff roll.
