Should I drop them into a regular ass Supermini like this Mk.3 Clio? It’d be a true euro muscle car.
As some will know its the engine and trans from the dead Espace, and those that have been to the March Europpomeet know that 150hp/350Nm are surprisingly sufficient for moving a 1,8 ton Van around.

Would be an insanely tight fit in a clio, probably would be clearancing the firewall or something to make room. The 2l petrol 197 has a super tight engine bay and the diesel with its turbo are even bigger. It would be a hell of a lot of fun though.

Would it though. They did sell the Mk.3 with the 2.0L M4R Petrol engine, and mine is a M9R Diesel, so I can’t imagine a huge difference in terms of length. Is the engine bay on these really that short?

Even if the blocks are a comparable size, you then have to accomodate the turbo. I’ve looked in the engine bay of a 197, there’s not much spare space, if any.

Could always go naturally aspirated if you want a miserable experience, or relocate the turbo somewhere else if you don’t mind some more lag?

You should be able to find a car it’ll fit in. My 2.0 turbo will fit in a 205 just fine. The firewall had to be massaged a bit for the exhaust manifold, but that was it mostly. Same engine family as the stock engine, so engine mounts are stock PSA.
What about a mk1 Clio instead? They did come with an optional 2.0 NA engine. Or, take it a bit further and install the front subframe of the Espace in the back of a mk1 or mk2 Clio. That the Clio is far narrower is nothing but a minor detail ;)
edit : easiest yet entertaining swap is probably a mk3 Clio or a Juke. They both had engines from this engine family. Find a Juke donor, install the drivetrain and either lower it or raise it.
