Seems someone helped himself to a hardy breakfast on my dime at a convenience store this morning, according to Chase fraud prevention. He then washed it down with $100 of something he bought at a liquor store.

Hope the bastard gets indigestion and hung over.

When someone duplicated my card last year, they got $200 in Old Navy gift cards and $4 of something from a vending machine.

I kinda felt sad for them. So little imagination.

I think the intent is to make small enough purchases with the hope it goes unnoticed, then just keep skimming one or two c-notes a month as long as it can hold out.

Yes, the small amount is very common to test if the card works. It’s also increasingly common for them to use online services to check, when one of my cards was done it was for a UK TV service, then a resturant in Tallahassee- That flagged it up with the bank.

Certain card processors will also make a $1 auth to store card details which can trip the fraud detectors as well.

Well, they did a crap job then, since they bought them 2 states away, which was an immediate red flag for the bank.

Someone once got my PayPal info off a keylogger installed to Miss Tesla’s computer. They bought $400 in iTunes cards on eBay. The login to my PayPal originated (theoretically) in San Francisco. My bank had the money back in my account by the next day.

While true, the login to PayPal was recorded from an IP in SF...Of course hacker guy could have been using a proxy though.

Yeah, you can sell them. I’d guess 50-60% of gift cards sold are the result of card fraud, another 30% or so are people unloading unwanted ones, and the remainder is MS in the card community.
