I’ve never driven a manual column shift car. What’s the most gears you could buy one with?
Edit: now with photo?

Some 80s JDM Toyotas had them with 5 gears.

The wheel cover makes that video even better.

The Renault 16 could also be had with one.

What is this vehicle that has a 6 on the tree?

I remember the old Toyota Dyna work truck that had a three on the tree manual box...I cannot begin to imagine how shit having three more speeds to row through would be.

Wow, I’ve driven a 3 on the tree F100 before and that was enough of a disaster. I can’t imagine a 4 or 5!!! I thought they stopped using them after the 70’s pickup trucks were the last holdouts. I had no idea there were newer cars with column shifters!

I took the temporary shift knob a friend gave me off the only five speed Lexus and wedged it into the wiper stalk.

I thought pickups and some late Malaise GM were the only ones. Interesting to see Nissan and Toyota sedans listed.

Well I’m a fool. Well played. I wonder how many cars actually have that cruise control stalk.

I think the Toyota Comfort in Japan can still be spec’ed with a 5-speed column shifter. At least a short while back in Hong Kong the LPG ones came with a column manual shifter, though the latest ones are all floor mounted 4-speed autos.

The last three-on-the-tree in the U.S. was on the 1986 Ford F-series.

Most American cars from the 50s to the 70s had a three-on-the-tree as the base transmission if a manual was offered.
Four-on-the-trees were quite common among French cars of the same era.

5 speed on some Toyota HiAce vans

80s French vans had them too.

Many older Japanese vans - Hiace, Nissan Vanette and others - had five speed column changes. I haven’t heard of six but I suspect they’re out there.
I’ve failed to find an image but until the 1970s MAN trucks could be had with 13 speed column changes.

Why is this a thing... you drive over some rough terrain or a pot hole.... shifter succumbs to earth’s gravitational pull and gets out of gear...
All hell breaks loose. cats and dogs living in harmony.
