It runs, it drives, it’s a manual, ‘nuff said for that price.
1991 Mazda 323 5 speed
Issues: Paperwork is borked, it’s got a Washington title filled out by the previous owner and me. It never went into my name because it’s got a small miss at idle and thus I couldn’t get a smog. This is the #1 reason why the cars cheap. I’d sell it with a bill of sale and all the paperwork.
The good: Had a tune up of cap rotor, plugs & wires. The timing belt was done in the last year. One new CV. The interior and exterior are great(for a $400 car).
A few other little things wrong with it but nothing serious. It’s located in Humboldt County California

My advice to people, Buy it. Parts are stupidly cheap on rockauto and they are a hoot even with the 80 hp SOHC. Haven’t regretted purchasing mine. Even though the engine lost oil pressure and is now crankwalking.

It’s 25 years old and wouldn’t need to be smogged in Washington at all.

God damnit. If you were in Texas I’d buy this as a DD. I’m 90% sure it wouldn’t need to pass emissions here.

Why do you have to be on the opposite coast?

All cars in CA built past 1975 need to meet whatever the emissions standards were, for the year the car was built. The smogs are must happen during a title transfer or in some counties, annually.

I’m aware of California’s more stringent rules, but I’m looking at those Washington plates and thinking you’d be wise to put it on Seattle Craigslist.

I’d be interested but I’m in Michigan. I’d love to get a cheap car to learn manual on.

But would anyone really cross another state just for a 323?

I would buy that in a heartbeat for beating on at rallycrosses and the like but I am on the opposite side of the country.

Maybe not. But didn’t you? Or did the previous owner just move to California with it and never smog or register it there?

Previous owner never registered it in Cali, probably because it wouldn’t smog

the small miss at idle is ‘normal’ apparently, could be a valve thats dirty or failing, never stopped mine though. im also sure its why mine keeps backfiring in the header while coasting.

That’s good to know, I may run some seafoam through it in a last ditch effort to clear up the miss. I’d love to get it in my name before I sell it because then I could sell it for closer to $1200 and actually make a profit

also, buying parts is addicting for these cars because parts are so cheap. kept contemplating Seafoam but now my bottom end is worn out, but i’d rather swap the engine at this point than drive it as is. I could drive it, but not when the failed main seal is leaking all over.

I’d recommend one of these or an older Volvo to learn, they are both very forgiving

If I thought I could bar it Id protege swap it(since apparently it drops in)
Buuut the nearest place that will bar a vehicle is 200 miles away and I’m not sure how well the evap equipment would swap (if I went to obd2)

oh so like an FS swap from a newer Protege? other options include the BP, BPT B6T.. etc. all were in the older 323s.
