That vintage of North American Volvo is dragged down by the GM transmissions in the S80 frequently failing. However, the S60 used an Aisin transmission that (I think) was considerably more reliable.

Good cars, maintenance is expensive when stuff does go wrong. Get the t5 for that sweet i5 turbo without the pain of the s60r suspension and other specialized parts

Are they bad to work on yourself?

My S80 has the inline six, and I’ve never had trouble replacing anything; but I’ve also never done anything serious, like a timing belt change.

Two of my fraternity brothers had S60s. They both got traded in. One had a bunch of electrical problems and the other one had a blown turbo.

I had an s70 so different platform but same drivetrain architecture and for most maintenance it was normal. Parts can be a little expensive but those motors are bulletproof. Some manufacturers haven’t gotten the reliable turbo motor down in 2017 and Volvo had it down in the early 90s

Addendum: Matthew’s Volvo Site has excellent repair guides for first-generation S60s.

But why didn’t they have Infiniti G35s? #FratStereotypes

Not as precise as the German rivals, but they’re still a lot of fun to drive. Bonus points if you find a manual. Seats are just as good as they look, and the number pad is a good conversation starter. There IS an aftermarket if you ever want to turn things up a bit.

The Legend had the C series V6 which is far superior to the J series.

Does that include the trans?

The legends were not known for having transmission problems. They are tremendously well built cars. I had a 91 Legend Coupe for awhile.

As I’ve likely touted many, many times, my dad’s got a V70 of that generation (P2) and it’s got 218K miles and starts without hesitation every morning. However, as it’s gotten up there it’s needed some bigger services like a new heater core and a camshaft servicing and I swear I can hear a bit of piston slap at idle, but it still consumes far less oil than our ‘05 Odyssey despite being a sixteen year old high-pressure turbo that still pulls strong. So essentially you can get one and rely on it for the most part, but if you need servicing the parts can be costly (and the labor, too, if you need a heater core :|

Well I think it just moved to the top of the list. Going to go check it out later today.

Oh I will. And a gps tracker, car alarm (don’t care if it goes off every time the wind blows), and if the budget allows. A handgun.
