My minivan was backed into by a moron in Illinois when my family and I were visiting my sister. It was (legally) street parked in the neighborhood and a friend of the woman who lives across the street backed her 2002 Pontiac into it.
She claims she “didn’t see it and [her] sensors didn’t go off.”
Disregarding that no 2002 Pontiacs had back up sensors...
HOW DO YOU NOT SEE A RED TOWN AND COUNTRY WHEN BACKING UP IN A NEIGHBORHOOD?!!!
Her insurance is fighting with my local shop right now over the cost of repairs, but my wife will be without a vehicle for a week with the boys. Luckily I walk to the train I take daily to work, so she will simply have to cram into the Vibe with them for a few days while I have ~$3000 repaired to the van.
Huzzah.
Picture in the exact location of the hit.

Dolled myself up for the first time in like a month. With all this stress I’ve been going through, I’ve not been taking care of myself, even gained 11 pounds. Hopefully getting back on track.

Same thing happened to my wife, except rear-ended. And we weren’t visiting your sister. Or in Illinois. Still, bad week for parked minivans.

Thankfully, being parked and unoccupied, it’s entirely paid by her insurance claim, so I owe exactly $0 on all of this, but still being without a vehicle sucks.
The best in the whole thing,
“Her coverage offers 50% payment of up to $40/day for a rental car”
“So $20 a day?”
“Well, 50% of up to $40.”
“Which is $20.”
“Unless your rental is less than $40.”
“I can’t rent an economy car in NJ for less than $40 after taxes.”
“Well that’s her policy.”
“Ok. I’ll have to tell her to up that for the people she hits in the future.”
“It won’t apply to yours as the accident already happened.”
“I was being facetious.”
“Oh. So you can submit the need for a rental car and we will review it for approval.”
“Your client hit my car, it is getting repairs you are paying for. What would you need me to submit? If I wanted a car, I would expect you to book me a car.”
It went on for another 5 minutes. I never once had an interest in renting a car, but I really wanted to waste the agent’s time. (I was on I-80 in the passenger seat at the time so all of the time in the world.)

We’re dealing with a neighbor, whose kid hit us. He really wants to not file a claim to avoid insurance. I hate that situation because then I have to trust that he will pay out of pocket and not balk no matter what final cost comes back. Ugh.

Document, get quotes, write contract with family, have them sign contract for repairs through X repair shop at $X and any additional that arise once work commences, and refunds if work comes in under. Cut check. Then start repairs.
That way the worst that can happen is that you are out a couple bucks, but not the entire repair.
Also with documentation and such you can have recourse by filing through [hopefully their] insurance, which while, not ideal, still better than being 100% on the hook yourself.

Yup. Regardless of whether or not they want to make a claim, we also made a full report to our insurer, per requirements of our policy.

I dropped my truck off at a body shop to FINALLY get it fixed after running over a deer back in April. And the attempted to bike home.
It was only about 46 miles.
I made it like 15, but was fighting a headwind so strong that took three hours. It was work even going downhill. So I stashed my bike in the bush and hitched a ride the rest of the way. No way was I making it home before dark at that pace, and no way am I biking along the second-busiest highway in the province after dark. I’ll pick up my bike whenever I go back for my truck.

I was 21 when I got my first car. Now I’m 26 and still have it... And three others. And a huge stash of parts.
