Who got stuck for 5 months out to sea and this stood out for me (not including their overall lack of preparedness and required skills to successfully do what they were attempting) regarding their comments about the sharks.
“They decided to use our vessel to teach their children how to hunt. They attacked at night.”
Sharks, sharks don’t rear their young... I can’t even... wut.

They were smart enough to bring a year’s supply of food though

Kids, this is what happens when you try to write in that glib, hipster style without knowing what you’re talking about.

True, yet they neglected to bring on board a essential piece of standard equipment for ocean going vessels. Or even just turn around when they lost their sat phone.

In this day and age, how does someone get stuck at sea for five months.
There are supposed to have radio and satellite communication.

The article says that they lost use of their sat phone early in the voyage and they only had short range VHF radio, why they decided to press on after losing their sat phone is something only they could answer I guess.

Except that was a quote from one of the women.

You should never cross an ocean without an EPIRB

I know it’s easy to sit here in my comfy chair and criticize them, but how could they not make some kind of headway with their sails? I know something was broken, but surely they had some time to figure out a way to rig up a sail. Or, were they unable to navigate without their engine (perhaps necessary to generate power)? So many questions; so few apparent backup systems.

They pressed on, but then wound up absolutely nowhere near the direction they were trying to go. I mean, you don’t need a GPS to go nearly due south. How did they intend to navigate in the first place?

I think it really just boils down to a skill gap that they didn’t realized they had due to their inexperience. Got caught up in the romance of a long voyage and weren’t adequately prepared.

THis makes no sense. 1 sharks don’t hunt boats and two they have functioning sails and a compass right? How were they stranded?
There is not enough information in their article and that pisses me off. Like explain why these retards were “stranded” with plenty of food and water.

Yes, of course you’re right. I was referring to the sailors trying to sound hip with a pithy quote. Novak’s writing is actually straightforward and not glib here. He does, however, not really question anything they say. He just takes it at face value.

My only questions are:
Why was is a disaster when the engines failed in their sailboat.
Sailboat.
And who cares if they were surrounded by sharks? It’s not like they were going to swim for shore.
When it’s all said and done I think those two dogs were the most relived that they packed a years worth of food.

They should of returned to port as soon as their sat phone went overboard.
Did they not have an emergency locator?
It just sounds so stupid, ignorant and highly irresponsible.
They were not only putting themselves in harms way but creating a danger in shipping lanes and putting others in danger.

Sorry, when you said “write” I thought you were talking about the post. I agree that they seem to have been totally unready for sailing open water like that and the stories that don’t even question why they were out there without proper communications equipment or the ability to repair their boat are dangerously incomplete at best.

No, my comment wasn’t written well. I am a little surprised at how this blog chose to treat the women like heroes for surviving without questioning their decisions. Gawker blogs are usually all too ready to lay into people for their mistakes.

I think you’re right, and they appear to have also lacked improvisational skills that I take for granted, especially where I like to read about adventure travel and no matter how prepared you are, you will meet the unexpected and have to improvise. At face value, they appear to have only been prepared to survive for a long time (good) but problem-solving wasn’t really on their agenda beyond staying alive.
