I’m sorry, but if the story about someone’s mom pulling the handbrake is true (which it’s not), then that that is insanely reckless. If I saw a car drifting around a curve at 40 mph I would call the cops and report a drunk driver. There is no way that person’s mom actually did that, “son, I drift this curve all the time, best you learn too if you’re ever gonna pass a test where you have to follow the law the entire time.”
Like, if you can drift your car, then you’re totally able to share the road with the rest of the population who doesn’t think that sending your car sideways around a bend is the pinnacle of car control.
I hate to be the Debbie downer here, but drifting =/= good driving.
Rant over, back to your regularly scheduled oppo, thanks for playing .

I didn’t take the story to be “Drifting means you’re a good driver”. I took the story as “Learn to react and control unexpected skids”.
Yanking an e-brake is a really stupid way to teach that lesson, but learning to recover from a loss of control is gold.

Car control is an important skill to learn but the road is not the place to learn it.

You do realize the name of the website right?
Joking aside, controlling a car sideways is a level of car control that most people don’t have. The amount of friends I have who have explained a bumper dent by “oh, I just hit a snowbank” is stupid high.

And all the people who get into fender benders just trying to get into a shopping center or parking lot is ridiculous in winter. I taught my ex how to pop the handbrake and do a quick 90 degree turn and she was amazed at how much easier some of the slippery entrances were when you can control the slide.

True, I suppose reacting to unexpected forces on the car is a good thing. I have a really hard time believing a parent sent their own car with their own child at the wheel spinning into a field in the name of teaching car control.

You missed the point of the article, which was to listen to my story. Please re-read and enjoy my newfound popularity.

There are plenty of examples of parents with poor impulse control.
Sometimes, that’s how they became parents.
