"Mercedes Streeter" (smart)

So, that custom modified aftermarket exhaust that I bought turned out to be a rusty bust. But, not all’s lost. I’m getting some monies back and the exhaust itself is a good working template for a proper custom centre exit exhaust for a smart with a towing hitch. I can even salvage the exhaust tip and the mounting flange, both of which just need a little cleaning. I found a shop that’ll do everything for cheap and is well rated.
But, what kind of muffler do I choose for this build? I’m looking for something that’s like 7 or 8/10 for loudness, but also has a good note. I love raspy notes (think Abarth 500) with little pop when you shift gears.
At the same time, I don’t want to spend $100 on a muffler. Then again, I’m not good at pricing jobs, so sub-$100 isn’t a requirement. lol
Is what I’m asking for even possible?
Have a picture I whipped up using three pictures in Paint for your time.

I’m a fan of Magnaflow oval mufflers. I have a pair on my LGT, and it’s a little bit on the louder side with some pops and cackles on the overrun (I have a feeling that’s due to the tune and not the mufflers though).
I believe they were $60 each when I got them, and they have a welded stainless steel case (though it is a cheap stainless, mine are showing some rust spots). They are tough too, i had one fall off 3 or 4 times while driving before I finally welded it on.
Take a look on Youtube for “car + muffler brand name” to see if anyone has done what you’re thinking. Someone might have already installed the muffler you’re thinking about and was nice enough to post an exhaust sound vid.

This. Comon’, it’s a little smart, it can’t be *that* loud with some straight 2.5" tubing.

You won’t get anything good for under $100. My Magnaflow Delta 60 on my Miata was $120 shipped from Amazon and another $40 to weld it on. It was very much worth it though.

Heh, I can make an exception to the rule, I’m not good with how much some jobs should cost. lol How does it sound? I’ll ship myself off to YouTube on break.

Isn’t the delta line flowmaster? Local muffler shops have flowmaster for <80 usually but yeah magnaflow is A bit more.

I love borla pro xs. I’ve had borla xr1 and it was a bit too aggressive. Magnaflow is good too and a bit cheaper. My current car has jones exhaust turbine designed by aero and it’s also excellent

Cheap glass pack muffler (like a cherry bomb). Glass packs sound good on everything, but not necessarily better than a custom system. Your smart won’t have any full custom exhausts (and you don’t want to spend more than 100$ anyway). Cherry bombs or similar become the obvious choice. I’ll post some links in a few if you want but I’m on mobile right now.

Had a glass pack on my Dodge Neon because teenage me made great choices. Sounded pretty good but was way loud. Maximum brap.

Me too, plus there are a ton of mufflers made by flowmaster. Magnaflow tends to be a couple basic designs in different sizes.

I just like these designs period. The systems I got for both my 2010 mini and my T/A are basically a modified glasspack but in a muffler layout:
Minis I cant find a pic of, but here the one I got for the pontiac
The one on my mini is a decent size (compared to the cherry bomb), with a cat and a resonator it sounds very nice, smooth and raspy at the same time. It isn’t obnoxioius for a DD. depending, you may want a bigger one on your car. fortunately they are inexpensive enough to make mistakes on.
my T/A actually has to run in order for me to evaluate that one for you.

I’d definitely try it without before going for one, just to see. The Abarth 500 basically doesn’t use a muffler, it’s got the turbo and the cat for its sound deadening.
If your Smart has one of these modern variable-vane turbos they do quite a bit of sound deadening by themselves...

The one I’m changing the exhaust on is the non-turbo. It sounds okay without the muffler. It’s very loud, but unrefined. I think a free flowing muffler (like a race muffler or a glasspack) will give it just the teeny bit of refinement it needs.

Motorcycle glasspack? Could be an option :)
