I drove the same car as my dad for years. Then I got rid of the RX-8 and got into an old-man luxury sedan.
Dad still drives his RX-8.

I got a grey BMW, so naturally my dad needed to get a grey BMW.
He was looking for something fun to drive. He didn’t like the 370z and was looking at 3 series coupes and I made the comment of it you don’t need the back seat anyways, why not look at a 1 series as well they’re cheaper. So that’s what he did. He said he wanted to spend around 20k. I was a little shocked when I got this text:

I like your dad.
Mine got his in red first, but I just can’t do red, especially Mazda orangeish-red. He suggested I get my own; so, I found one in blue.
The shocker was back in 1986, when Mom was looking for a car. We were comfortable in our perception of her as an Olds sedan kind of gal, and that’s what she was test driving. Should have known better. One day she comes home and announces she bought a red RX-7.

When he was my age, he had both an 82 Supra and a 78 280ZX. Me owning 2 BMWs now makes more sense.

Someone local is selling a 2011 E90 M3 sedan with DCT and 77,000 miles for $28,000. “Two sets of wheels, two exhausts and front sways.” Was raced in autocross, possibly other settings. I’m not in the market, but because you are the expert I was curious on your take: Nice price or crack pipe?

Depending on the service history and options it’s close to the market value. If he’s had an oil analysis done and it’s clean, it’s probably a NP. That said, I wouldn’t want to pay for a potential clutch replacement.

I’m already playing that game of odds with the DCT in my GTI, and I was told that the DCT clutch should last more than 200,000 miles, even with spirited driving . . . we’ll see.
Interesting to know that it could be NP - I’d still go buy my 2016 GTI again brand new for only a few grand more, but they have important differences pro and con for each, of course.

I know a family friend had a 545i with the SMG. Clutch went bad at like 100k, it was a stupid amount to change.
2008s with 100k are right around the 20k mark, and looking at other cars on the market that around that year and mileage are right around that price. I know oppo usually tends to think anything that way bellow market price is a CP price, but this is priced right at market value.

The blue is better, but the grey actually looks pretty good on your dad’s car.
Imma need you to change this to ‘Necessary car shopping with E90M3' next spring when I’m in the market - although I’ll be limited to sedans.
Also, my dad copies my brother on his car purchases - bought a green 2001 Durango 6 months after my brother did, then recently bought a burgundy Pilot about a year after my brother did (no they’re not car people, duh).

How expensive is the clutch job? My friend has a 2011 335is DCT with 67k miles that he drives hard.

The grey on my car has actually really grown one me. I really wanted white because they look really good in Alpine White.

I think I can handle that. I’m trying to convince my friend to get a 135is. He’ll be in town this week and I think we’re going to go look at that 1.
I think my dad is more of a car person than I give him credit for.

A quick google search says 3296 , which I’m not sure I believe. It’s at least a $2200 part , plus labor. I’ve got a 6MT in both my BMWs, so I don’t have any first hand knowledge.
I know a neighbor had an E60 545i with an SMG, different transmission but somewhat similar, that needed a clutch and I think the repair bill was north of 4k.
