A little too late to help out Napoleon.

I think it’s good they finally have an airport previously the only way there was via ship (RMS St Helena) from either Ascension or South Africa which meant flying from the U.K. To Ascension, then catching the ship there or flying to South Africa to catch the ship there. The ship goes from South Africa to St Helena to Ascension, then back taking three weeks.

The airport not only opens them up more to tourism but means more specialised medical assistance is greatly more accessible.

The idea is to give the islands economy a boost, give better access to supplies and open the island to investment. Currently the U.K. Spends many millions each year subsidising travel to and from the various islands around the world.

Unfortunately, this probably means the end of RMS St. Helena , always wanted to do that trip.

On the other hand, it’s a solidly built, newish ship - might find a second career doing expedition-style cruises or something.

I realize that I’m commenting on an old post, but there is now a 45 minute documentary on YouTube about this airport. Pretty neat. I was going to make a post about it but you can just update your post to include it if you want.

I was going to star a clever comment, then I noticed it was mine.

It was such a momentous moment, locals gathered to watch the first commercial flight the island has ever welcomed land safely.

So, how many other commercial flights failed to  land safely before this one?

That was really neat. There’s something missing though. The British funded passenger/cargo service may have stopped, but there must be some other cargo shipping for goods and services. You can’t ship everything on small jets.

I am pretty sure that there is still cargo service. The jet fuel has to get there somehow. I think that the RMS St Helena was just the only passenger service available.

Yes, and I wonder about the details of that service. It has to be profit for someone.

I figured you'd appreciate the documentary linked in my comment here. I was going to make my own post about it when I stumbled upon this old one.

Too late I’m afraid. The original St Helena stopped in 2018. There’s a new ship of  the same name but it's mainly cargo.
