Quiz- which of the cars below has a completely custom body style - which was not offered by the factory that year?

Kinja'd!!!

1962 Ford Galaxie - G code 406 tri-power. This car had a sweet lope at idle.

Kinja'd!!!

1962 Catalina bubble top - aluminum block dual quad motor. Much louder than the Galaxie above.

Kinja'd!!!

1958 Impala

Kinja'd!!!

1957 Eldorado Biarritz. Running a more recent 472, and nearly silent (especially compared to the Pontiac and Ford up above)

Kinja'd!!!

1959 Olds 98; 1964 Catalina; and I believe a ‘49 Chevy.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, there are 2 - 1961 Ford Sunliners in this picture. And a 4 door convertible Continental.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Elephant.

Kinja'd!!!

TURBO!! 1963 Corvair, with a factory turbo flat 6 and a 4 speed.

Kinja'd!!!

1966 Charger - factory Hemi

Kinja'd!!!

1964 Galaxie, 427 4 speed. Sorry, some of the pictures are out of focus.

Kinja'd!!!

1953 Buick Skylark - took them 10 minutes to get this car running. RNM at $125k.

Kinja'd!!!

One of several Trans Ams

Another 455 T/A

Kinja'd!!!

1963 Catalina. Was wearing 421 badges, but says it was a 389. Column shifted automatic, so I’m sure it’s not a 421.

Kinja'd!!!

61 Vette

Kinja'd!!!

389 from the ‘63 above

Kinja'd!!!

67 442 and 64 GTO

Kinja'd!!!

65 Nova

Kinja'd!!!

I spent little time watching the actual auction - with 1,000 cars to see, who has time?

Kinja'd!!!

1976 2002. IIRC this sold for $3k. Automatic (sad trombone)

Kinja'd!!!

Charger with a 440 (73?). Went for $18k. Looks gorgeous within 10 feet but there’s as much filler as metal down low...

Kinja'd!!!

427 Vette

Kinja'd!!!

The 66 Hemi Charger

Kinja'd!!!

‘61 Vette interior

Overall, 10/10 would recommend - tons of cool people around looking and talking about great cars. Parking sucked, but for $20+a few beers, it was a great day.

At one point, we were standing in between two 427 Vettes that were being started up, to go across the block. That was a lot of sweet, sweet, big block noise!

Those Poncho’s are excellent. If I bought a new car in 1973, it would be a 455Sd.

1. Regarding this:

Quiz- which of the cars below has a completely custom body style - which was not offered by the factory that year?

I don’t really care. Maybe the Buick or the Catalina.

2. Some of your pictures are kind of fuzzy. You need to work on your focus.

3. Regardless of the shortcomings in 1 and 2 above, your taste in cars is perfect. You are indeed a fine connoisseur of cars. Please take more photos and post them; in or out of focus.

Those are pretty rare cars. I was surprised to see so many 455 TAs there. Cool cars.

Yeah the 62 was one of my favorites. It sounded fantastic too.

And the Sunliners are just cool.

Lol the pictures were all taken with a potato, and a majority were taken while I held a beer in one hand. That said, I was obviously disappointed with some of the results, but in a few cases I posted the pictures anyways because the car was so cool.

Very few people will care about the car that was hacked together Frankenstein style, but I found it interesting.

Yeah, that’s about right - if anything, toward the top of that range for a 427, unfortunately.

I’ll take the blue Galaxy that you opened with, but I’d prefer four doors.

Yah, I kinda thought the same on your other comment, but I think it was meant in a positive spirit. Considering that I was walking around with a beer in one hand and a potato phone in the other, it’s surprising the photos weren’t worse.

I was torn between the Galaxie and the Pontiac as my favorites. Those two went across the block consecutively, and I spent some time following them through the conga line leading into the building just to hear both of them idle. The Galaxie had a wonderful big block lope at idle, and the Pontiac had cutouts and sounded great, but was much louder. The 406 lope is why it’s the first picture and not the 2nd.

BTW, no one but me cares, but the quiz answer is the Pontiac. The GM bubble top cars *almost* ceased to exist after ‘61. The only one that carried over was the Chevy Bel Air (not the Impala). The rest had formal rooflines. Someone took a ‘62 Grand Prix and did a hell of a lot of metal work to convert it into a bubble top.
