Today I was able to take a tour of the of the maintenance facility of the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport Plane Train. If you have been to the airport here in ATL there is a very good chance that you have ridden these Bombardier CX-100 train cars. The train cars live an interesting, but predictable life. On average they are 18 years old and have a service life around 22 years. They run on 600 volt three phase power and have an operating speed of 24 mph and a top speed around 35 mph. They get inspected every 2 days and have a major maintenance visit once a year. They run on Michelin tires and these last for about 100,000 miles. Wait times between trains right now are 110 seconds, but they are working to get it down to 90 seconds.
Here is a schematic of the line from the control room. Orange blocks are trains.

Here is the modified Chevy they use to service the switches and tunnels that the trains run in.

Huh. I was just watching a segment about exactly that on Netflix last night - the train cars at ATL.

110 seconds between trains? Doesn’t feel that long, though I’m fortunate enough to have never been in a hurry when connecting through ATL.

These are similar to some of the trains on the Paris metro.

The only time I flew to ATL, I walked a mile following signs saying to go that way. When I got to the destination, it told me to get on the train I’d been walking next to the whole damn time. Luckily, they have those neat moving walkways.

It becomes real helpful when you flight from CDG lands and you need to clear customs and make you connection on B concourse in half an hour. . . . Ask me how I know. . . .

I’ve ridden on those. They are rather . . sketchy. . .

haha the metro isn’t so bad. Some of the trains on the B line aren’t my favorite.

1. Awesome post, just awesome.
2. Regarding this:

I’ve seen it first hand, the doors will indeed reopen. You have been lied to. The guy certainly got some dirty looks from others in the train car for the extra 110 second or so delay. But he did not lose any limbs in the process.

It was an interesting trip, but not my most awesome post. I have also seen the doors reopen. 30lbs of Force is what I think they said it takes for them to rebound.
