You’re good, I like the way those look, but I think I prefer these:
I kind of want to get some for the 3, but I’m not sure how they’d look and finding ones the right size could be a colossal pain in the ass. They were offered on the E39, but for some reason the hub is a different size on the E39 than basically every modern BMW, so the rims are different. You can get an adapter, but I’d like to avoid that. So I’d have to find some that came off a 7 series, but then those aren’t as common.

Not to be a downer but I’ve been through a couple cars with those wheels. They’re not what they seem. They’re cheap metal covered with a plastic laminate that appears to be nice metal. However, that shit peels off in sheets over time. I don’t have a good close photo but this is my old car with clean rims:
Oh wait here’s a better one. The wheel well damage was from picking up a retread on the freeway. It didn’t do the damage to the wheel.
I think some sandblasting and powder coating was involved in the pic you posted. Get that done and you might be rolling in style. Used or old though you’re not going to like them.

That’s fair enough. It seems like wheels on the E46 M3 and the E39 M5 suffered from the same thing, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Is that a 6spd? When did you own that? I have an e39 540i in alpine weiss with style 32s that has been through many many owners. And a shitty paint job on the rims. Last 7 of my vin if you still have yours to reference GC93140

Yes, it’s the manual. I put an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter into it and every pixel on the dash worked. I bought it from the second owner who was a corporate finance guy who bought it from Car Max with the unlimited warranty and had every detail fixed on it until the warranty ran out and then I bought it. Had it for ~2 years and sold it ~2 years ago to a BMW enthusiast in Northern California who I think was a lawyer.
No idea what the vin was but the fact that all the pixels on the dash worked should make it a unicorn. I wish I hadn’t sold it but it was starting to get oil leaks so I’m sure I’d have regretted it either way. All that car really needed was a LSD so you could put down all the power from that V8.

Ya I regret buying mine lol. I mean I love the car but so many red flags I ignored while buying it. Timing guides went, haven’t finished putting it back together because I keep finding more broken shit. Could have gotten a much nicer one for the amount of money I’ve put into it if I’d been patient. It’s rust free at least which is a first for me so that’s nice.
I did one of those free car report things after I got it. I was like the 7th owner or something I immediately closed it and wished I’d never looked that up.

I’ve been through three of them. One was an automatic that I bought from a pilot who maintained it like an airplane. $3k. Fuel pump went on my drive home, sure, but otherwise great. The middle car was middling. Wasn’t well maintained. Then the Car Max car was solid. I think it’s all about how it was maintained before you got it. I’ve heard horror stories but never lived through one. My M5 however....

Have you had the alternator go on any of them? That’s one of my roadblocks atm, do I spend the 400$ on a rebuilt bosch or risk having to drain the coolant again if this one fails under my ownership.

Never had a problem with the alternator in the 540. (Lost one in a M5 which took the battery and ECU with it for a tune of $2700 though.)
If you have to drain the coolant I assume it’s mounted on the bottom of the engine like the S85. Same basic repair. You can use cardboard and caution to not bend the fins on the radiatior and not drain/remove it with the S85 from what I’ve heard but as I have no lift I paid to have it done.
What’s your worry though? Are you getting fluctuating voltage or something? I don’t think $400 for a rebuilt unit is that bad but I’d yank an alternator off a junker to save a few bucks. I never heard of them being weak points though — the plastic chain guides are the widow maker and it sounds like you’re past that hurdle?

It’s just I’ve already got it apart you know. So its easy to do now. But I’m being cheap. I’ll probably end up tearing it open and checking the brushes on the voltage regulator. It appears original and it’s at 180k so the usable life left is questionable.

Ah - then I get the logic completely.
If I were in your shoes I’d patch it back up and feel pretty good about it. I generally expect to put about 10k miles on a car in a year as I’ve got a short commute and options and I’d expect something like an alternator to hit 250,000 miles without much trouble. I also am reluctant to do much proactive preventative work on a car with that mileage. You might spend $400 on an alternator only to have the replacement chain guides fail before the alternator does.
Then, if the car makes it to 300k miles then buy it anything it would ever want.
It’s kooky logic, I admit.
