As many of you know, I’m looking to replace my ‘01 Lexus LX470, which turned out to be more of a money pit than a buying someone else’s project boat. I’m looking to replace it with a sedan, wagon, or hatch. Budget is around $6500 firm. I want comfort, at least 18/25mpg, and reliability, and low running costs, so I’d like to keep milage no higher than about 120k. I don’t want some huge old barge like a Lincoln Town Car. Other than that, I basically just ask that it’s in pretty good shape with an interior that isn’t black or grey, and that it have enough power to safely merge onto a highway and cruise comfortably at 80mph. What would you suggest?

Kinja'd!!!

Van for your time.

Saab reliability/maintenance scares me, but they’re so cheap that it’s not a hell no.

How about a Volvo S40 or V50? The 2.4i, non turbo version can be had pretty cheap by now, they’re solidly built, decent interior for an “entry level” car, and the V50 we had was pretty darn reliable. Plus they make a decent noise out of that I5. Non-black interiors aren’t common, but I just saw one on Cars.com with cream leather seats.

The back seat is a bit cramped if someone is going to ride back there, but the larger S60 or V70 would have the same engine in the 2.4i spec. I’m not personally familiar with the T5 versions of any volvos, but I haven’t heard anything scary about them either.

If you didn’t specifically eliminate large cars, I would have suggested a Mercury Grand Marquis. The cheaper version of the Lincoln you banned, but they will seriously last forever with minimal costs and can often be found with low miles because it was “grandmas old car”.

Of all the cars you suggested, I would probably be most likely to go with the S60 or V70, which I actually really like. The interiors on the S40 and V50 are just sort of bleak and depressing to me, especially in the black color they are most commonly found in. And I’m still holding out on driving some big panther platform car or similar.

I’m assuming you could talk the GS seller down a bit, but admittedly probably not below $7-$7.5.

The problem is, in my own head, your wants point my brain toward the Japanese luxury brands - and those are HEAVILY skewed toward black and grey interiors.

Kinja'd!!! CobraJoe > sm70- why not Duesenberg?
10/09/2017 at 12:06

Kinja'd!!!1

You can find a V50 with a lighter interior , but they are a bit harder to find (S40s aren’t much easier to find in non-black interior). At least they’re easier to come by than the T5 5 speed version that I keep looking for. (There is only 1 for sale on cars.com, and it’s in california.)

The S60 and V70 has some amazingly comfortable seats, so it might be worth going that way just for that reason alone.

Maybe not that exact example but im sure you could find a 3rd gen TL with a stick with the tan interior. I have an 05 auto and its a GREAT car and with the stick you avoid the only weakpoint which is the A/T durability.

Kinja'd!!! awmaster10 > sm70- why not Duesenberg?
10/09/2017 at 12:25

Kinja'd!!!1

With a v8 they are excellent to drive but they are essentially an S type jag so not too reliable. From what ive seen the TL would be a good fit if you can find one with tan interior but if its an auto you want an 07-08. 04-06 A/T is not very reliable, but all years of M/T are the same. That being said I drive a high mileage A/T 2005 and don’t think twice about it ever.

Or find a 1st gen is300 with tan interior since the A/T is solid in those and the M/T is good too but rare.

Also consider a 2nd generation gs430 or gs400 which will run less than the 3rd gen suggested above and has a SWEET v8. Handling is sloppier by far than a TL though even with the RWD advantage.

Kinja'd!!!2

I shared my sentiments in other comments but heres my overall take since ive owned 3 cars that fit these exact requirements. Ill just give opinions on what people have mentioned:

Volvos:

I had a 1999 S70 GLT AWD with 140k on it that was very reliable, very comfy, and quick in a straight line. The volvo turbo motors are no less reliable than the 2.4NA, and the motor is certainly not the weak point on these cars. They are mostly reliable, but not cheap to repair when they do go wrong. I really like the s60/V70 T5 out of your volvo selections. I had a tan interior in mine and it was quite nice.

Lexus:

I had a 1998 GS300 that I drove from 160k to 200k. The thing was an absolute TANK and didnt have a single problem. Supremely comfortable, but handling is sloppy and the interior looks horribly dated, especially in tan. In your price range you would want the v8 versions (gs400 gs430). If you step up to the 3rd gen you get better handling but will probably be forced to settle with the smaller motor because of cost. The first gen IS300 would be a great choice if you can find one with a tan interior, but is a little cramped.

Acura:

I currently drive a 2005 TL A/T. It outhandles my old GS300 and S70 by miles, and feels about 10 years newer. The interior is great, the exterior looks great (IMO), and the v6 is silky smooth and loved to rev. If you can find one with a tan interior and especially a stick, this is a fantastic choice. Keep in mind 04-06 A/T is weak. All years of M/T and 07-08 A/T are reliable though. You could also consider a first gen TSX, which handles a little better but is less refined and much slower.

Infiniti:

Take a look at some 05-06 g35 sedans, or even 2nd gen sedans if your budget allows. Keep a look out for rust, thats about all that goes wrong. Easier to find in a tan interior than most Japanese sedans and easier to find in a stick.

Others:

Saab 9-5 was mentioned and is not as unreliable as you may think. High repair costs like a volvo but the important components dont go bad often.

I’m not sure if they’ve gotten down to $6500 yet. Find one like mine with a manual transmission; those might be cheaper. Red and dark Grey have beige interiors, whilst silver has black. Those were the only three colors you could get with the manual. I find it a fun car to toss around, this coming from someone whose previous cars were all expensive and German. It’s the ultimate in stealth - minivans are essentially ticket repellent (unless you’re doing something incredibly stupid). And sliding doors are the greatest thing to ever happen to cars.

ymy thoughts are Acura TL or RL. meet mpg requirements, are quite comfortable but still somewhat sporty. They’re reliable, cheaper than Germans to fix. Both have V6s, TL fwd, RL AWD. TL is pretty well loaded but 06+ RL is loaded up with tech. Personally I feel the RL is a better value.

other thoughts: Volvo S80 (07+). Very nice cars, comfortable, quick, well built. Fantastic value, I’ve seen several 07-09 for $6k or less with 120k miles. MPGs are good, only concern is reliability (depending on engine [I5, I6, V8]).

Lexus: maybe 2nd gen IS, but could be hard to meet your mileage standards.

Infiniti: G35/37 are both great options, M35 is a good option too. Probably hard to find a Q45 within mileage constraints and doesn’t meet mpg standards i don’t believe.

Honestly mine hasn’t cost me more to run than any other car I’ve had. Well, insurance, yeah, but as far as parts go I’ve put in less than $300 per year of ownership.

I know but overall the cost tends to be enough higher that I’m not prepared to take the risk.

Find a low miles unmodded early ‘00s Buick Regal GS. Comfortable interior, supercharged 3800 has plenty of power and they are overall very reliable and cheap to maintain. (not all had supercharger, make sure you find one that does) Easily meets your MPG requirements. I would recommend something newer but your strict budget requirement has me looking older...

My grandmother had a Regal of that gen, which I borrowed several times. The grey interior in that (I believe grey was the only interior color for the GS) is one of the most depressing car interiors I’ve ever ridden in.

Maybe I’d do a Park Ave Ultra, but the inside of the Regal is bad enough to ruin the whole car for me.

VW Jetta with a 2.5? The 2.5 uses a timing chain and has proven to be very reliable. VW come in tan for interiors. And the non turbo, non TDI VWs just don’t hold value that well. This is close with lots of budget to spare, also comes in wagon and stick if you search. And for a base engine it’s got a little go.

Otherwise mazda6?

I’ve heard the 2.5 is kind of a steaming pile of shit in terms of reliability.

Hi, new Jkm.

IS300 still ticks every box except mileage. I’m getting 17/23. But I have a non-black and non-grey interior!

Yeah the grey plastic everything is a bit much, but it would make reasonably comfortable quick reliable transportation!

Honestly, except for the first year when there were some timing chain/guide problems(serious but not really wide spread), I’ve never heard bad things about the 2.5 engines reliability. Sound a little rough? Yeah, I’ve heard that complaint. Not the best gas mileage? Yep, still better than your Lexus but not a great competitor to a 2.0 duratec. Heavy? Yeah. Unreliable though? Not that I’ve ever heard.

My SIL has had her ‘05 2.5 Jetta (manual) for almost 8 years, and has had bizarrely zero problems with it other than an ignition and maybe a battery. Interior has held up well, other than the usual early ‘00s VAGCOM buttons rubbing blank over time.

Don’t have Craiglist because I’m not in the states.

But from what I can gather you’re probably going for a Lexus IS/Mazda6/Subaru Legacy/Acura Honda Accord?

I wouldn’t write off BMW, Merc and Audi entirely either. Not all of their cars are as high-maintenance as their M stuff.
